George Earl Moore, Jr. passed away suddenly at his home in
Covington, Louisiana, on Monday, February 9, 2026. George was born in
New Orleans, Louisiana, on May 4, 1938, to George Earl Moore and Marguerite Bonvillian Moore.
He is survived by his sister, Darnell Moore Ellingsworth (James), and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marguerite Bonvillian Moore and George Earl Moore, Sr.; and his siblings, Jacqueline Moore Patterson, Bettie Ann Moore, Edward Denis Moore, and Charles "C.J." Moore.
George graduated from East Jefferson High School in Metairie, Louisiana, in 1958. Because of his deep religious faith and love of God and His Holy Family, George committed to a calling to the service of God's work. In 1961, he entered the Catholic Christian Brothers, received the Religious Habit September 7, 1961. The following year on September 8, 1962, known as Brother George, George accepted his first Vows of Religion. During his time as a Christian Brother, he attended St. Michael's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he received a Bachelor of Science in May 1965, majoring in Mathematics.
A blessing for his Moore family who had recently moved to Covington, George was assigned his first teaching position as Brother George at St. Paul's School from 1965 to 1971. He took a short time off to attend Nichols State University where he completed his Master's Degree in Education, majoring in Guidance, while teaching there as a Graduate Assistant in 1972. He returned to St. Paul's to teach two other times, 1972-1973 and 1984-1986 school years. He was principal of Cathedral-Carmel High School in Lafayette, Louisiana, 1979-1982; and founding Principal of St. Thomas More, also in Lafayette, 1982-1984. After teaching at St. Paul's in 1986, he was reassigned to St. Michael's High School in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to teach Math and Religion, while also serving Assistant Principal of Discipline. In his 29 years as a Christian Brother, George traveled to places he never expected and studied in both Paris and Rome. He was an educator of mathematics, religion, theology, guidance, and a mentor to countless students. Grateful for his life as a Christian Brother and proud of his service, in 1990, George made a difficult decision to leave the life he loved to return home to be near his family once again.
He accepted a position teaching Mathematics at Covington High School for the school term ending 1991. George remained at Covington High School as Guidance Counselor until his retirement June 2013.
He will be certainly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of George Moore may be made to St. Joseph Abbey, or masses may be said in his memory.
