George O'Meara

George O'Meara, age 89 of Carmel, NY passed away June 14, 2022 in Purdys, NY.
"Grandpa" George O'Meara may have only had one grandson, but he was known as "Grandpa" as though it was his first name to all who knew and loved him. He truly made everyone feel adopted.
George's deep love for his friends and family, his humor, quick wit, and kindness will be remembered. Nothing in the world meant more to him than his family, except maybe golf and Italian sausage. He will be met in passing by his adoring wife of 47 years, Theresa O'Meara, his parents Margaret and George O'Meara, his siblings: Herbert Hasse, Claire (John) Gaykowski, Margaret (Ireland) Sommerville, Joseph O'Meara, Frances (Joe) McCaffrey-Mulgrew, and his four children Vincent Vanderhoof, Terri Ann Ahmad, Kathi O'Meara and Georgie O'Meara, whose photos he kept by his bedside until the last breath.
After transitioning from living in Florida for 40 years, he returned to New York and spent the most recent years living with his sister and amazing caregiver, Mary Ann (Ray) Thomas and enjoyed the company of his other sister, Kathleen McEniry-Doherty just up the road. His antics traveled often to Ohio to visit his pride and joy - his grandson, Humiar Ahmad and Humiar's wife, Maggie Ellison. George took pride in teaching Humiar to golf and called every day and always asked, no matter his health condition, "how was your golf game?"
George has a great extended family, and many friends, and he loved each of them with all of his Irish heart.
He loved to tell stories of his time in the U.S. Army and he wore an American flag pin every single day to show his pride for the country. Throughout his life he worked a variety of careers, but what mattered to him most was getting out on the green, having a beer while watching his favorite sports teams and being with his family.
When he departed Florida, he missed his Dunkin' Donuts coffee club (and the warm weather!) and still called down to friends and family almost daily to check in.
A Memorial Mass of Christian rite will be held July 6, 2022, 10:00AM at St. James the Apostle Church, 14 Gleneida Ave, Carmel Hamlet, NY 10512
In lieu of flowers, get out and do something! George had a particular zest for life that was hard to match. Go show someone kindness, make someone's day. It's all "Grandpa" would ask of you.
