Gerald was born in Long Beach, CA, on October 6, 1937, to the late William and Kathryn (Storm) Gaines. He was then raised by his aunt and uncle in Los Angeles, CA, from the age of 9.
He graduated from San Gabriel High School in Los Angeles and served his country as a Corporal in the U.S. Army. He received his bachelor's degree in education from Fresno State College. He then went on to become a 5th grade teacher at Reynolds School District where he retired from. Gerald loved to go hiking, kayaking, and to build and fly his model airplanes.
He married Ruth (Stratton) Gaines on December 29, 1961, and she resides at home. They were married for over 60 years.
Gerald is survived by his wife, son; David Gaines of Jacksonville, NC; brother: Steven Gaines of CA; Four grandchildren: Jennifer Gaines of Greenville, PA, Jeffrey Gaines II of Jamestown, PA, Wesley Gaines of Raleigh, NC, and William Gaines of Jacksonville, NC.
He is preceded in death by his parents and son Jeffrey Gaines.
