Gerald Walter Kordes, affectionately known as Gerry, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2025, in Louisville, Kentucky, after a long health battle. Born on January 20, 1937, in Louisville, he was a beloved figure in his community, known for his dedication both professionally and personally.
Gerry was a graduate of Manual High School in Louisville and furthered his education at the Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville. His career took off with his impactful work for the City of Louisville Department of Traffic Engineering, where he played a crucial role in placing tornado sirens throughout the city, contributing to the safety of countless residents. Later in his career, he worked as a draftsman at Boland and Maloney. Following this, Gerry pursued his passion for education by obtaining a teaching certificate to teach architectural drafting. He imparted his knowledge at Shawnee High School, Ahrens Technical School, and Pleasure Ridge Park Vocational School, where he was dedicated to guiding students into successful careers, notably through his involvement in the co-op program that placed students in local businesses.
A veteran of the Kentucky Air National Guard, Gerry served honorably for six years, embodying the values of service and commitment. Outside of his professional life, Gerry cherished his time in his backyard garden, where he tended to his beloved tomato plants, which reflected his nurturing personality. He also enjoyed fishing and had a deep affection for his family, maintaining strong ties with both his father’s and mother’s families.
Gerry is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Sharon Kordes, and his golden retriever, Lucas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Helen Kordes.
