Jerry graduated from Cathedral Prep and attended Southern Illinois University to complete a Ph.D. in mathematics.
He returned to Erie in 1976 and taught Mathematics and Computer Science at Gannon University. At Gannon he installed the first computer lab and chaired the Mathematics Department.
Learning, teaching, and service to the community and the church were lifelong passions. For more than 30 years, Jerry was the Coordinator of the MATHCOUNTS program for the Erie Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers and, at St. George Church, he anchored the Lector and Eucharistic Minister programs.
He also contributed to numerous academic publications, created questions for the American Mathematics Competition, and performed analyses to support wide-ranging activities such as court cases, industrial manufacturing, and Environmental Protection Agency studies.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald R. and Beatrice M. Kraus; brothers, Emmett F. Kraus and Vincent J. Kraus.
Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Ann R. (Rutledge) Kraus; three children, Gerald T. "Jerry" Kraus and his wife Amanda, Philip A. "Phil" Kraus and his wife Peri, Cynthia A. "Cindy" Otegui and her husband Michael; three grandchildren, Adhalia and Aidan Kraus, and Michael Otegui; one sister, Barbara Von Hoene and her husband Paul; one brother, Robert F. Kraus and his wife Jacqueline.
The family is grateful for the compassionate care and medical expertise of Dr. David J. Seastone and Dr. Archana Anand.
Friends are invited to call on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory; 1595 West 38th St. at Greengarden Boulevard. A funeral mass will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. George Church, 5145 Peach St. Entombment will be private at Calvary Cemetery.

My sincere condolences to the family of Jerry Kraus. He was my debate coach at Cathedral Prep in the 1960's along with his brother, Emmet. He was kind and knowlegable and a wonderful and truly caring person. I have many many happy memories of him and of his brother. May he rest in the peace of our Savior. Ann, I am so very sorry to read about Jerry's passing. I loved working on his projects. He was so meticulous and wanted perfection. I related to his work ethics immediately. So many authors were not as thorough and that bothered me. Being assigned to his projects was a breath of fresh air for me. Both you and Jerry are two people I highly respect. May God give you the strength you need to go on this difficult journey of life without him. Rest in peace, Jerry.
