Gladys Deloris Mason, affectionately known as "Sis," was born on June 21, 1948, in Caruthersville, Missouri. She was the third child of Ellis C. and Louise Mason, who both preceded her in death.
Gladys peacefully passed away in her sleep on February 16, 2025, at 7 a.m. at the home of her caretaker, Sandra Abram, in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Her battle with leukemia was brief but marked by remarkable strength and resilience. Despite facing physical challenges from birth, Gladys defied the odds with the support of her family's prayers and the grace of the Lord. Though doctors once gave her a limited life expectancy, Gladys lived a long and full life, cherishing countless moments spent with her loved ones.
Family was everything to Gladys. She cherished reunions, graduations, and all special times spent together. She had a deep love for food and often took center stage in preparing meals. Her dedication to others was reflected in her many talents, including knitting and sewing quilts, blankets, hats, scarves, and baby booties. Gladys also contributed to family jam and jelly-making, playing a key role in cutting the fruit.
A devoted Christian, Gladys accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was a long-time member of New Bethel Baptist Church in Benton Harbor, Michigan. She was an active member of the church choir and served as its president for many years.
Gladys graduated from Eau Claire High School located in Eau Claire, Michigan, class of 1966. Gladys also carried with her a deep sense of love for her community and family throughout her life.
She is survived by her siblings: Lueceal Mason of Benton Harbor, MI; Rosetta Draper-Faulkner of Tucson, AZ; Alex Washington of San Diego, CA; Mary Booth (Adrian) of Detroit, MI; Sharyl Victorian (Frank) of San Diego, CA; Charles Mason (Debbie) of Warner Robins, GA; Linda Mincey (Willie) of Sacramento, CA; Sheila Frazier (Joseph) of Tucson, AZ; Michael Mason (Joy) of Eau Claire, MI; Aundrey Mason (Sophia) of Benton Harbor, MI; Elaine Sumpter of Benton Harbor, MI; Patricia (Dewayne) Robinson of Benton Harbor, MI; Sylvia (Kaya) Sanders of Benton Harbor, MI; and two sisters-in-law, Joyce Mason of Sacramento, CA and Betty Mason of Benton Harbor, MI.
Gladys is also survived by her aunt, Alice Clay of CA; two uncles, Roy Glasper (Nancy) of CA and Theodis Glasper (Lillian) of MO; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ellis and Louise Mason; three sisters, Allen Mason, Gloria Rush, and Charlisle Mason; one sister-in-law, Regina Mason; four brothers, Willie Jackie Mason, Freddie Hayes, Duane Thompson, and Ellis C. Mason Jr.; as well as one niece, Latonya S. Brown, and five nephews: Raymond Calloway, Adrian M. Booth, Harry Rush II, great nephew Roderick Townes Jr., and great great nephew Mykah Townes.
