Gretchen Alicia Sharpton, age 79 passed away peacefully at the Journey Home in Bartlesville Oklahoma on July 19, 2024. She was born March 29, 1945, in Winfield Kansas to Robert Wentzel Tennery and Cathleen Fay Tennery (Bowlby).
She was raised in the Wichita area where she attended Wichita High school and graduated in 1963. Following high school she married Norman Lee Sharpton on December 19, 1964. The two had one child Lacey.
Gretchen will be remembered for her independent personality, trailblazer attitude, and outspoken and strong-willed soul. She truly lived her bucket list, from horseback riding, skydiving and repelling to attaining her pilot's license. She traveled the Southwest with a tent and a jeep before many areas were considered parks or known by the general public. She rode a motorcycle for nearly 40 years, which included travels to 49 states, Canada and the Baja Peninsula. Her last bucket list item was getting a mohawk which she fulfilled in the last few days of her adventurous life. Her mantra: "Well-behaved women rarely make history."
Despite her outgoing and adventurous side, she loved deeply and was most loyal to those who knew her well. She was most proud of her daughter Lacey and her only grandchild Trevor (and her red truck, Sparky).
Gretchen is preceded in death by both her parents Robert and Cathleen, her loving husband Norman, and her sister Paula Ann Ramsey.
Her memory lives on with her Daughter Lacey Johnson (Ron Bullard), her grandson Trevor Johnson, and her nephews Terry and Tommy Sharpton.
