August Norbert "Gus" Kampeter, age 89 of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away January 31, 2024, at his home surrounded by the love of his family.
He was born on October 18, 1934, in Argyle, Mo., the son of Herman Joseph and Rose Therese (Wieberg) Kampeter.
On January 6, 1953, Gus enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving his country during the Korean Conflict, and earning the National Defense Medal. His honorable discharge came on December 7, 1956.
Gus's journey into the automotive world began at Riley Chevrolet, where his interest in the car business flourished. Years later, he took a significant step when he opened Central City Auto Sales, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1996.
A proud member of the American Legion Post 5, Gus had the privilege of taking the Honor Flight in July of 2017. In his earlier years, he played baseball for the Taos team, participated in bowling tournaments, and achieved two holes-in-one at Redfield Country Club during his golf ventures. His shared passion for golf with his daughter, Monica, took them across the United States playing on different courses together. Gus cherished outdoor activities, from camping to fishing for crappie and Missouri River catfish with his son, Mark, creating everlasting memories. His interests extended to hunting deer, elk, and crow, as well as watching dirt track races at Capital Speedway, Lucas Oil and following NASCAR.
Beyond these pursuits, Gus found joy in watching and feeding birds, antiquing, tinkering with old clocks, monthly card games with his siblings, and fervently cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Chiefs, and MU football and basketball. Most of all, he reveled in traveling with Johnna Sue on road trips and cruises. Gus always appreciated the Central Dairy ice cream he shared with his granddaughter, Jessica, and the tins of cashew nuts that his son and grandson, Blayde, gave to him at Christmas.
Survivors include his long-time partner of 13 years, Johnna Tate of the home; two children, Monica Rackers (Randy) of Taos, Mo., Mark Kampeter (Lori) of Jefferson City, Mo.; three grandchildren, Jessica Strobel (John), Randi Lynn Boehner (Trent), and Blayde William Kampeter; one great grandson, Jakeb Weber; two siblings, Emil Kampeter (Gladys) and Fronnie Corl; one sister-in-law, Lucille Kampeter and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Lucy Drinkard (Chester), Roman Kampeter (Josephine), Victor Kampeter, Vinston Kampeter (Alice), Mary Ann Miller (August), Lorene Pauley (Bazel) and one brother-in-law, Paul Corl.
Gus expressed gratitude to his close friends Alan and Debbie for their chicken and beef noodle soup and poppy seed bread, B.J. and David for honey and veggies, Sam and Mary for cookies and peach pie, and David and Wanda for peanut brittle, chocolate candy, and ice cream. A special thanks went to all the staff at Hospice Compassus, especially nurses Kari and Bai, for their loving care for him and Johnna Sue.
A visitation will be held Monday, February 5, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., at Freeman Mortuary.
