Dr. Weyl was a distinguished physicist, passionate skier, and beloved husband, father, and Papi (grandfather). He passed away peacefully on January 9, 2025, at the age of 88. Born in Strasbourg, France, in 1936, he moved to America with his family at the beginning of World War II. He escaped to New York City via Portugal in 1940, at the age of 4, on the Nea Hellas with his father Raymond Weyl (1907-1965), his mother Suzette (nee Levy) Weyl (1914-2010), and older brother Jean Phillipe (1934-2020), becoming American citizens before returning to France, when he was 12.
Guy was an academic. He attended a French day school in New York, the Lycee Pasteur in Paris, and the prestigious Physics and Chemistry School of Paris in 1960. He returned to the U.S., but to the opposite coast, for a PhD in theoretical plasma physics at UCLA, where he was a Hertz Fellow. His 1967 thesis on "Nonlinear Interaction of Waves in a Plasma" was coveted by the physics community for its brilliance and by his family as a cure for insomnia. But his biggest accomplishment in Los Angeles was meeting and marrying Eveline Denise Moos, from Annecy, France, in 1965. They were hoping to celebrate 60 years together in July of this year.Eveline and Guy produced Sonia (Weyl) Levy and Estelle Weyl in Los Angeles, before moving to Lexington, MA, where they added Dominique Weyl to the family clan.
Guy specialized in the interaction of high-intensity laser beams with materials, contributing significantly to government-funded research, working at AVCO and Physical Sciences Incorporated, before pivoting to investing in 1993.
Beyond his professional achievements, Guy embraced playfulness and mischievousness, finding joy in the little and big things, from getting on his hands and knees to play with his grandchildren to letting them dress him up in costume. He was an avid skier (famously beating future world ski champion Jean Claude Killy in a slalom race in Val d’Isère), tennis player, stock market enthusiast, and philanthropist. Guy also volunteered his time to tutor recent immigrants to the Boston area in Math and Physics.
He will be remembered for his brilliant mind, kind heart, mischievous wit, and unwavering dedication to science and family.
