Harry Gan, 97, had a long, happy life filled with love and laughter. He died peacefully on February 21st with his family by his side.
Harry was born in Rochester, New York to Isadore and Katherine Gan. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Adele; and his children, Todd Gan (Deirdre); Peggy Yellin (Harold); and Larry Trachtman (Lisa). He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Levy Gan, and his siblings: Mac Gan, Sarah Feldman and Minnie Kotzin.
He is survived by his 5 grandchildren: Joshua Yellin (Ashley), Stephanie Yellin (Ericka), Jace Gan (Natalie), Ben Trachtman (Courtney) and Morgan Moushon (Blake); 3 great grandchildren Audrey, Levi and Ellington (born the day after Harry passed away); and numerous nieces and nephews and friends, all of whom he adored.
Harry was a proud graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, where he was an accomplished athlete and earned the nickname "the rabbit" because of his speed and agility on the track and football field. After high school, he became an auto mechanic and worked with his brother, Mac Gan, at Mac's Auto Service and later at Harry and Gordy's Auto Service on Hudson Avenue, which he started with his childhood friend and brother-in- law, Gordy Kotzin. They were respected for their hard work, honesty, and integrity.
Harry led a very active life, before and after retirement: golf, skiing, flying his airplane, wintering in Florida and spending time with his grandchildren all over the country. He loved to garden and care for his yard which became the envy of the neighborhood. He had the ability to fix anything that needed to be mended or repaired, which came in handy for his beloved 1957 T-bird convertible.
Harry was always there for others. The twinkle in his blue eyes, his sense of humor and his kind nature will be missed by all who knew him. No one was able to resist his charm. You always felt better after a visit or a one on one conversation with Harry. Not surprisingly, he had the ability to touch his family, make them bloom, and to repair his family whenever the need arose.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Jewish Home of Rochester, Cottage 3 Floor 3 for their loving care of Harry over the last 14 months.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jewish Home Foundation (Rochester) or Rochester Regional Health Hospice.
Graveside service will be Monday, February 24, 2025, 11:00 am at Riverside Cemetery, 2650 Lake Avenue.

God Bless you, Mr. Gan (still can't call him Harry, even though he insisted on it after I grew up!). Your wonderful smile and happy greetings will always be a treasured memory growing up. I agree about your lawn, always perfection:) and I loved when that T-Bird would go driving by!!! I hope us Jason(s) didn't drive you crazy too much-all in fun and from the heart. Will miss you and smile every time I drive by the house on Angora and see a T-Bird go by!!

Love from Ellen (Jason) Muto 93 Angora 50+ years ago!
