Harry R. "Ace" Iser, 87, of Rawlings, MD, died Sunday, July 14, 2024 at UPMC Western Maryland in Cumberland, MD.
Born on December 5, 1936 in Dawson, MD, he was a son of the late Edgar Russell and Sadie Roxie (Ketterman) Iser. He also was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Shirley A. (Davis) Iser on January 13, 2009 and several brothers and sisters.
Harry was a graduate of Allegany High School and was best known for his love of baseball. He held several records at Allegany High for many years, including the record for the longest ball ever hit. Upon graduation, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates as a pitcher; however, Harry got called up to the military and served his country in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Morocco, Africa until 1963. During his stint in the military, Harry played baseball for the Navy.
After his service in the military, Harry worked for PPG Industries and retired from the Greensburg, PA facility in the 1980's. He returned to Rawlings and to work for the Labor Union # 616, serving as a foreman with the Carl Belt Company at the Westvaco Luke Paper Mill facility. He retired from there in 1995 and spent the rest of his days enjoying the things he loved most; hunting, fishing, golfing and gardening.
Upon his return to Rawlings, Harry was well known among the fast pitch softball circuit. He attended Danville Church of the Brethren where he played for them for many years in the pitcher position in the Christian Fast Pitch Softball League. He also was an active member of the Danville Community Baptist Church and for a short time, served as the pitching coach for the Fort Hill Girl's Softball Team when his granddaughter Shaina played for them.
Perhaps his most favorite place after his home was his second home in Smoke Holes, WV. He started taking his family there in 1963 and the family still goes to that home today! It is a beloved place!.
Surviving are his children, Steve Iser and significant other, Lori Smith, Vicki Smith and husband Rodney and Christine Lambert and husband Robert; his grandchildren, Shaina Baker and husband Michael, Stefanie Swanger, Steven Iser and wife Tara, Matthew Smith and wife Amanda, Brady Barnhart and wife Hannah and Katlynn Pease and husband Jeff and his great grandchildren, Mykah and Sadee Baker, Jayce and Presley Swanger, Parker and Lennon Smith and Jensen and Chase Pease. Also surviving is a brother, Paul Iser of Silver Spring, MD; two sisters, Rosemary Hott of Florida and Linda Lease of Rawlings and his special companion of 13 years, Sandra Miers Pickett of Keyser, WV.
Friends will be received at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Thursday, July 18, 2024 from 3-7 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Danville Community Baptist Church on Friday, July 19, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Chris Talton officiating. The family will also receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Waxler Cemetery, Rawlings.
The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Waxler Cemetery for maintenance and upkeep in Harry's memory. Donations may be given to any of Harry's children or mailed to Waxler Cemetery, c/o Steve Iser, P.O. Box 205 Ellerslie, MD 21529.
