Helen B. Unger passed away peacefully on November 11, 2024, at her residence in Norwood, PA, at the age of 87. Born on August 23, 1937, in Philadelphia, PA to the late William and Mary (Keys) Boyle, Helen was a cherished daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, Godmother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cousin who left an indelible mark on the hearts of those she encountered.
Helen's early years were spent in Philadelphia where she attended St. Athanasius Grade School and Little Flower Girls High School, class of 1955. Her academic foundation set the stage for a successful career as a network administrator for Verizon, a position she held with dedication and skill. Helen's work ethic was only matched by her commitment to service, as she was an active member of the Verizon Pioneers, a group of employees who dedicated themselves to charitable endeavors such as assisting The Ronald McDonald House, visiting nursing homes, and community service activities such as planting trees at Valley Forge Park.
Beyond her professional and charitable endeavors, Helen was a devoted wife to her late husband, Paul L. Unger, for 65 years, and a loving mother to her children Mary Unger SSJ, Thomas Unger, Lisa Korbel, and Joseph Unger. As the family communicator, Helen was instrumental in keeping multiple generations connected, including cousins and extended family, often orchestrating gatherings and ensuring that family ties remained strong.
Her brother, the late Ronald Boyle and sister-in-law, Frances, shared in the family's closeness, and Helen's legacy continues through her grandchildren Christopher, Erin, Leigh Anna, April (Carlos), Tracy (Keith), Gina (Carl), Jenn (Graham), as well as great-grandchildren Alex, Josh, Jazmyn, Isaiah, Joey, Tru, Jax, and Maddy.
In Helen's personal life, she found joy in being a past poll-worker in Norwood Boro, a role that exemplified her belief in civic duty and community participation. Her gentle nature and commitment to service made her a respected figure within her community.
Sea Isle City held a special place in Helen's heart. For 54 years, she enjoyed hosting family and friends at her beloved retreat, creating a haven of warmth and hospitality.
Even during her illness, Helen's concern for others never waned. She continued to reach out to family and friends, always more interested in how they were doing rather than focusing on her own struggles.
Helen's life was one of selflessness and love, her gentle demeanor and caring ways leave a lasting impact. Her unwavering dedication to her family, her work, and her community set an example for all who knew her. Helen's presence was a gift to those around her, and her memory will be cherished and honored by all who were fortunate enough to be touched by her kindness.
Most importantly, Helen loved God and lived as a true Catholic Christian, praying for and with others, and by putting gospel values into action daily. Helen, we are blessed by your presence and example in our lives. Enjoy the glory of God face to face, and happy reunion with all loved ones in heaven.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Funeral, with a receiving period to take place Monday November 18, 2024, from 9:00am until 10:45am at the Cavanagh Family Funeral Home, 301 Chester Pike, Norwood. Her Funeral Service will follow at 11:00am, with Father Brady from St. Gabriel's Parish presiding. Interment Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery.
