Herbert J. Meyer, 100, of Jefferson City, Missouri, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2025.
Herbert was born on February 3, 1925, in Pilger, Nebraska, to the late Otto and Elizabeth (Renterghem) Meyer. He attended St. Peters for school and at nineteen he was drafted into the United States Army-Airforce, he served dutifully until he was discharged after the end of the war. During that time on September 5, 1944, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Speckhals, where they spent a wonderful sixty-four years together, building their family and life.
Herbert spent twenty-five years working for International Shoe, and then seventeen years at the Department of Revenue for the State of Missouri.
A lover of the outdoors and the simple joys of life, he found happiness in fishing, camping, and growing tomatoes each season. Whether he was casting a line, tending his garden, or sitting peacefully on the back porch, he truly cherished time spent outside and embraced the beauty of nature.
He bowled in the senior league, Herbert was also a dedicated member of several local organizations that reflected his strong sense of community and service, including Eagles Aerie 2693, American Legion Post 5, and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jefferson City.
Herbert will be remembered for quiet strength, kind heart, and unwavering love for the outdoors, and his patriotism for his country.
Herbert is survived by his Daughter; Joyce (Robert) Jurd. Son; Denny (Marian) Meyer. Grandchildren; Stephanie (Alan) Cortvrient, Mike (Kim) Jurd, Rebecca Jurd, Jason Meyer, Christopher (Jessica) Jurd, David (Alica) Jurd, Amy (Ken) Sheffield, Taylor Meyer. Brother; David Meyer. Twelve Great-Grandchildren, and Several Nieces and Nephews.
He was preceded in death by his Wife; Dorothy Meyer, Brother; J.O. Meyer, Sister; Cornelia Schepers, and Daughter-In-Law; Tina Meyer
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 8, 2025, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project. Click here to view the service live stream
