Winterville, NC – Hilda Vandiford Smith, 83, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
The funeral service will be conducted Friday, October 24th at 6:30 pm in the Smith Funeral Chapel officiated by Chaplain Steven Gay. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5 to 6:30 pm at the funeral home.
A graveside service will be conducted Sunday, October 26th at 3 pm officiated by Minister Bradford Linton in the Smith Family Cemetery, 300 Smith Cemetery Rd., Banner Elk, NC.
Mrs. Smith was born in Greene County, NC on July 6, 1942, and was the daughter of the late Herbert and Virginia "Belle" Vandiford. A 1960 graduate of Maury High School, Hilda was a 1981 graduate of Lenoir Community College. She spent many years as a homemaker and later as an accounting clerk with Coastal Wholesale in Kinston, NC and with Foothills Trucking in Newton, NC. She enjoyed reading, quilting, and traveling with her late husband, Oscar "Sonny" Smith.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Lorena Bunn; brother, Jesse Ray Vandiford; and granddaughter, Renee' Stancill.
She is survived by her three sons, Milando Stancill (Donna) of Winterville, NC, Terry Stancill (Denise) of York, SC, and Greg Stancill (Cissie) of Elizabethtown, KY; grandchildren, Jedediah Stancill (Samantha) of Pink Hill, NC, Kathy Price (Mike) of Greenville, NC, Brent Stancill (Fran) of Blackburg, SC, Shane Stancill (Melinda) of Elizabethtown, KY, and Paige Updegraff (Adam) of Alvaton, KY; great-grandchildren, Lexi, Brayden, Memphis, Wyatt, Gabriella, Gracie, Haylie, Eli, Alex, Gabe, Chuck, Bear, Zander, Aiden, Samuel and Daniel; and siblings, Richard Vandiford (Brenda) of Ayden, NC, Virginia "Sister" Vandiford of Aiken, SC, and Charlie Vandiford (Judy) of Greenville, NC.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to The Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Ct., Goldsboro, NC 27534 in memory of Mrs. Smith.
The family would like to thank the staff at Kitty Askins Hospice Center for the exceptional care given to Mrs. Smith.
