Hubert Leon Gaudin, known affectionately as Hugh to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2025, in Austin, Texas, at the age of 96. Born on September 22, 1928, in Westwego, Louisiana, Hugh's life was marked by dedication, service, and a gentle spirit that left an indelible impact on all who knew him.
Hugh's journey took him from his roots in Louisiana as a Cajun, to the halls of the University of Texas at Austin, where he pursued his passion for numbers and graduated with a degree in Accounting. His education laid the groundwork for a life of meticulous service and commitment. Hugh's sense of duty was further exemplified by his honorable tenure as an Army Corporal during the Korean War, a period that shaped much of his resilient character.
After his military service, Hugh embarked on a distinguished career with the Internal Revenue Service, where he eventually retired as a Branch Chief. His colleagues remember him as a man of integrity and kindness, a mentor who led by example.
Away from work, Hugh was a true Texas Longhorn at heart, with a deep love for University of Texas sports. Baseball, fishing, camping, and hunting were not just hobbies for Hugh; they were extensions of his love for life and the great outdoors. His legendary fish fries were a testament to his joy in sharing good food and great company.
Hugh's family was the cornerstone of his world. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Hooper Gaudin; his son, Rod Gaudin and daughter Vickie Gaudin; his grandchildren, Tyler and Travis Gaudin, Scott Pollard, Lauren and Erik Garcia; and his great-grandchildren, Marlee and Jolie Garcia. Each family member was a cherished chapter in Hugh's book of life, and he leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
Hugh Gaudin's story is one of a life marked by quiet strength, enduring patriotism, and a deep-seated love for his family and community. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the enduring footprint he leaves behind. Hugh will be profoundly missed, but the memory of his gentle soul will continue to inspire and guide us; his life can be defined as a life well-lived.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at Harrell Funeral Home 4435 Frontier Trail Austin, TX 78745. The family encourages everyone to wear casual clothes, UT attire, fishing, hunting wear etc. Just not black!
