Hugh O'Neill Obituary

HUGH O'NEILL IV, affectionately known as "Tug," passed away peacefully on Monday, August 12, 2025, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the age of 78, following many months of declining health. Beloved father of Keely O'Neill of North Carolina, who brought him immense pride and joy; dearest brother of Molly O'Neill of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Shelly Thompson of Charlottesville, Virginia; and Peggy O'Neill of Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Tug was the first child of Hugh O'Neill III and Betty Arthur O'Neill, and the first born of the "cousins-generation" of the O'Neill clan. Growing up in a large Irish Catholic family, he carried forward the traditions, values, and philanthropic spirit that defined his lineage.

Tug began his education at Gesu School, and then Gilmour Academy. He continued his higher education at Georgetown U. and graduated from John Carroll University. Throughout his school years, he was known for his vibrant personality, athletic talent, and the multitude of friendships he formed. He especially enjoyed and excelled at diving, snorkeling, snow skiing and yoga.

A true adventurer, Tug traveled extensively throughout the United States and visited more than 25 countries, often accompanied by family members and friends who shared in his zest for discovery. At home, he was equally lively- surrounded by his large, energetic dogs, who were his constant companions. He was a voracious reader, a lover of music and an enthusiastic dancer. Those who knew him best will always remember his ready jokes, quick wit, and the ever-present twinkle in his eye.

He spent most of his life on the east side of Cleveland, where he first pursued entrepreneurial endeavors before later joining the family business, Manfredi/Disttech Trucking. His work was marked by loyalty and a commitment to carrying on the family legacy.

Above all, Tug treasured his role as a father. His memory will live on in the hearts and in the countless lives of friends and family who were touched by his humor, kindness, and adventurous spirit. Tug's vibrant presence and keen wit will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Hope for Honduran Children (hopeforhonduranchildren.org/help.php) or Children's Hunger Alliance (childrenshungeralliance.org), two charities close to Tug's heart.

Special Acknowledgment

Tug's family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Lynette Donaldson, whose devotion, compassion, and tireless care blessed Tug's final years. For nearly two years, Lynette provided not only skilled care, but also true friendship, laughter, and dignity. She became part of our family, easing each day with patience and love. Tug's comfort and joy in his last chapter were made possible by her remarkable spirit and loving kindness. Our family will remain forever grateful.

A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, September 6, 2025 in Our Lady Chapel at Gilmour Academy at 10:00 a.m. Interment private, Evergreen Hill Cemetery.
