James David Biles III, born June 10, 1941 in Memphis, Tennessee died peacefully at home in
Annapolis, Maryland on September 12, 2024, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. A fourth
generation physician, he was the son of James D Biles Jr and Elizabeth Hough Boone Biles, and
older brother to Kelly and Lisa Elliott (deceased). Jim leaves behind his wife of forty-four years,
Brenda Lee Catterton, his three children James IV, Lindsey and Michael and his six grandchildren,
James V and Adalyn, Jack and Ryen (Dumont) and Sienna and Camila.
Jim was a graduate of Memphis Central High School, Yale University (BA), Columbia College of
Physicians and Surgeons (MD), and completed his Surgical Internship at Charity Hospital, Tulane
School of Medicine and his Residency at The Brady Urological Institute, Johns Hopkins Hospital. He
was accepted into the American Urological Association and was a Fellow of the American College of
Surgeons. He served two years active duty as an Army Major at Edgewood Arsenal conducting
research before becoming one of the founding partners of Anne Arundel Urology, practicing at both
Anne Arundel Medical Center, now Luminis Health, and Baltimore Washington Hospital. He held an
Instructor Appointment at Johns Hopkins Hospital and was also elected President of the AAMC
Medical Sta serving on several Hospital Boards. Jim absolutely loved practicing medicine,
specializing in urologic cancers, and faithfully served the needs of his patients for forty-one years.
His other great passions in life were sailing and his family. A self-taught sailor, he grew up
racing Snipes on the TVA lakes and continued racing collegiately, helping to establish Yale
racing as a varsity sport. He settled in Annapolis so he could continue racing on the
Chesapeake Bay. He competed in International 14's and J 24's his entire life, even after
becoming handicapped. He was Governor of the J 24 fleet and helped to establish the East
Coast Championships as a major regatta in Annapolis. His wife, children and grandchildren share his
love of sailing and cruised the Caribbean with him and crewed for him on the J 24 in local regattas,
Midwinters, East Coasts and North American Championships.
Jim was also very devoted to his family, spending many happy and involved hours with them and their
friends as they grew up. He loved watching his children and later grandchildren, who are all great
athletes, sail and play baseball, soccer, basketball, ice hockey and lacrosse at the recreational, high
school and college levels. He loved playing cards with his family and friends, especially crazy eights
and gin gummy. He also enjoyed family vacations skiing, sailing, camping, hiking, horse back riding
and sightseeing. He played tennis and squash and golfed. He loved dancing with Brenda,
played the piano and guitar, and enjoyed reading and lively, intellectual discussions.
He will always be loved and remembered for his sparkling and mischievous blue eyes, his warm smile and zest for life, his courage through adversity and his indomitable spirit.

Dr. Biles occupies a coveted seat in the pantheon of physcians. I learned today (1/7/25) of his passing from another great surgeon who recently performed hernia repair for me. Dr. Biles operated on me 15 years ago. Pre-op he himself took some tissue for biopsy talking the whole time, largely as I recall, about how we humans were destroying the environment. Dr. Biles the teacher also taught me about the elasticity of the bladder, knowledge I came to use later in life as a young ER doctor said I didn't need a catheter but agreed to have one placed after I argued based on what Dr. Biles taught me. What impressed me most, however, was the call I received from Dr. Biles on Thanksgiving morning. As I recall the TURP was done that Monday and when I asked if could travel to NJ for Thanksgiving he said no. I don't know if he called just to check on my recovery or to make sure I didn't travel, or both, but clearly this was a man , a doctor, who cared. For all who knew and loved him I share the foregoing with deepest sympathy for your loss only to say that your father, husband, grandfather, sibling, friend made a difference in my life even as he set a standard of excellence.

I had the absolute pleasure and honor to work with Dr B for many years at his office both Glen Burnie and Annapolis. I will always treasure those memories.

I first met Jim in 1990, as I started a solo Urology practice after a 20 year military career . I was immediately impressed with his intelligence, friendly and gregarious nature and it was not too long before we collaborated in the OR on some difficult cancer operations. He was an excellent sturgeon with a vast medical knowledge and experience. We maintained close as friends and colleagues eventually founding Anne Arundel Urology combining his practice with Ray Herzinger and Ed Zagula with John Danneberger, Dave McHold , and myself in 1998. We remained close colleagues and our children grew up together on the lacrosse fields at Severn School. We share a unique experience in both having sons Michael Biles and David McDermott Jr who are partners and friends at AA Urology. Needless to say to say, this has for years generated affection, professional collaboration, and extraordinary pride .
Jim was a fabulous Doctor, Surgeon, Friend, Family man , Raconteur, Bon Vivant ,and lived life to the fullest. He will be missed and loved by All.
