Jim was born June 15, 1934, in Nicholas County, Kentucky, the son of Esta and Goebel (Campbell) Caswell. He married the love of his life, Barbara Nan Williams, on June 1, 1963, in Lexington, Kentucky, and the couple shared more than 62 years of happy marriage and raised two daughters together.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. A graduate of the U.S. Army Intelligence School at Fort Holabird, Baltimore, Maryland, Jim went on to serve with the 902nd Counter Intelligence Corps at the American Embassy in Karachi, Pakistan.
Jim devoted his career to the Department of the Army for 37½ years, beginning at the Lexington Army Depot from 1952 to 1963, before moving to the Quad Cities and continuing his service at the Rock Island Arsenal until his retirement in August of 1989. His specialties included automated financial accounting and systems security administration.
A longtime member of Riverside United Methodist Church in Moline, Jim was a man of faith, friendship, and fun. He loved fishing—especially in the Canadian wilderness—and took dozens of trips to Ontario and the Northwest Territories. An avid golfer, he served as administrator of the Duck Creek Retirees Golf League in Davenport, Iowa, for over 33 years. He also enjoyed college basketball (especially his Kentucky Wildcats), riverboat casinos, dining out, golfing, and traveling with his beloved wife, Barbara.
Jim is survived by his wife, Barbara; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth Caswell and Paul Schipper of Portland, Oregon, and Susan and John Allemeier of Harrisonburg, Virginia; four grandchildren, his pride and joy, Ian and Abigail Schipper, and Noah and Claudia Allemeier; and his brother, Esta “Jay” Caswell of Paris, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Adrian Scott, Estella Marshall, Helen Noe, Edwin Caswell, Robert Caswell, and Kenneth Caswell.
