James DeBurger Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

James "Jim" Mark DeBurger, Sr., age 75, of Jeffersonville, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 10, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on December 19, 1949, in Madison, Indiana, to James Edward DeBurger and Marie Francis (Bolton) Tandy, Jim lived a life full of laughter, stories, and snapshots-literally. For many years, Jim worked as a driver for Nu Yale Dry Cleaners, where he took pride in being dependable, friendly, and always ready with a good conversation. He was a proud member of the Optimist Club and a member of Walnut Ridge Baptist Church.
Jim had many loves in life, but photography might have topped the list (besides his family, of course). If you knew Jim, you knew that sooner or later, the conversation would turn to cameras, lenses, or how he managed to print enough photos to fill every album-and then some. At every family gathering, he was the unofficial historian, telling stories of "the good old days" and capturing new memories with his ever-present smile and camera in hand. A true sports fan, Jim cheered passionately (and vocally) for his favorite teams: UK Basketball (the best basketball team of all time), New York Yankees, and both the Cleveland and San Francisco football teams. He could talk sports stats, family history, and camera specs with equal enthusiasm, often all in the same conversation. He also had a deep love for genealogy, spending hours reading over his family roots and piecing together the stories that shaped generations. His curiosity, humor, and heartfelt storytelling made him the heartbeat of every gathering.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Mary Elizabeth (Ragan) DeBurger; two loving sons, James Mark DeBurger, Jr. (Catherine) of Charlestown and Joshua A. DeBurger (Charla) of Jeffersonville; and his four beloved grandchildren, Charles, Lincoln, Grace, and Emma, who were the pride of his life. He is also survived by his mother, Marie Tandy of Evans, GA; two sisters, Charlotte Riley (Tom) of Evans, GA and Stella Bruner of Madison, IN; along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will miss his laughter and light.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Edward DeBurger, his brother, Daniel Allan DeBurger, and his grandparents, who no doubt welcomed him home with open arms.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at Scott Funeral Home (2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville). Visitation will be held from 11 AM until the service time on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
Jim's legacy will live on in the photos he took, the stories he told, and the love he shared-a reminder that life is best lived with a camera in hand, a smile on your face, and joy in your heart.
