James "Jim" Eugene Gerth, 87, returned to his heavenly home on August 28, 2021, after a short illness. He passed away at home surrounded by his loving family. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.
Jim was born in Seymour, Indiana on November 2,1933 to parents Arthur and Lucille Alexander Gerth. On January 23, 1957, he married the love of his life and best friend, Beverly Hall at St. Ambrose Catholic Church where he was a lifelong member.
Jim graduated from Seymour High School in 1951. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958, stationed stateside and in Italy. Jim retired after dedicating 35 years with Cummins as a System Analyst.
Scripture states, "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves" (Phil 2:3). Jim was well-known for his servant's heart. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1252 and the Elks Lodge 462. He was also an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary and was active in the Hispanic ministry at St. Ambrose, teaching English as a second language. Jim enjoyed playing golf, reading and doing crossword puzzles. His most treasured memories are of the times spent with his family.
Jim leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Bev; his children, Tony (Beth) Gerth, Mike Gerth, Mary Rita (Dennis) Carlson, and Beth Anne (Mark) Schultz; 10 grandchildren, Aaron Gerth, Marc Gerth, Laura Hayes, Brandon Gerth, Emily Burns, Gabe Gerth, Connor Gerth, Taylor Schultz, Katie Oakes and Claire Carlson; and 7 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother William Gerth, and his sister Dorothy Gerth Rude.
You may pay your respects during visitation on Thursday, September 2, 2021, at Voss & Sons Funeral Service from 4pm to 7pm with a rosary beginning at 3:30pm.
The funeral mass will be held on Friday, September 3, 2021, at 11am at St. Ambrose Church with a one-hour visitation before mass. Father Dan will officiate assisted by Deacon Mike East. Jim will be laid to rest at St. Ambrose Catholic Cemetery. And his Lord said to him, "Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord." (Matt 25:23).
In lieu of flowers and gifts the family requests donations in memory of Jim be made to St. Ambrose Catholic Church, in care of Voss & Sons Funeral Service.
