James E. Guest March 8, 1935 – January 19, 2023
Age 87, of Plain Twp., passed away Thursday, January 19, 2023 at Rose Lane Nursing Facility. He was born March 9, 1935 in Canton, OH, the son of the late Norman E. and Evelyn (Bogner) Guest. He was a Veteran serving in the Army and was stationed in Alaska. He graduated from Lehman High School and attended Georgia Institute of Technology. After his military stint, he became a chemist at United Engineering. As the computer field continue to grow, he took a job with IBM and retired from there. He became an entrepreneur operating an ice cream stand for a few years followed by being a realtor in partnership with his wife.
Jim's community service was prevalent throughout his life. He was a member of the Jaycee's, former Pro Football Hall of Fame Parade Chairmen, Soap Box Derby Volunteer, Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland and East Central Ohio, Massillon Train Club, Rose Society, Plain Township Historical Society, Canal Fulton Heritage Society, TCA, Elks, Eagles, Ohio Canal Society, Ohio and Erie Canal Corridor Coalition, as well as other canal societies.
He was a train and canal enthusiast. Jim was the last surviving original "Canal Boss" that built the St. Helena II canal boat. His passion for canals made him part of a group of people that were/are the leading researchers on the history of canals. Jim was also known for his portrayal of Joseph Porter, a former Canal Boat Captain, on canal boat charters.
James is survived by his wife, Barbara with whom he celebrated his 60th Wedding Anniversary with in Oct 2022; daughter, Cynthia; sister, Judith Rhodes; and cousins.
Funeral services will be a private family graveside service. A celebration of life gathering will be announced in the future. Burial at Warstler Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Plain Township Historical Society, 2600 Easton St NE, Canton, OH 44721; or Canal Fulton Heritage Society, 116 South Canal Street, Canal Fulton, OH 44614.
