James R. Hironimus, 83, of Antioch, passed away on March 6, 2024, at his home. Born and raised in Waukegan, he pursued his passion for science, earning Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Northern Illinois University. Jim was a dedicated educator, shaping the minds of future leaders for over 25 years in the Highland Park High School District as a Biology and science teacher.
In 1980, he realized his dream by building his home in Antioch, where he found solace in nature. Jim cherished the sight of wildflowers blooming in the woods, the diverse wildlife, and the beauty nature offered. He lived by his environmental principles and was a true steward of the Earth.
Jim had a deep love for travel, particularly enjoying his adventures in Africa and Egypt. He was a loving husband, brother, uncle, and dear friend, and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his sister Donna (Lonnie) Smith and his brother John (Jatta) Hironimus and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his spouse Patrick Raqua; and his sister Dorothy (the Late Geroge).
Private burial services will be held in Rochester, Wisconsin. Funeral arrangements by McMurrough Funeral Chapel, Libertyville (847) 362-2626. Please sign the guestbook at libertyvillefuneralhome.com

Today, I have just learned of Jim's passing. It is with tears and smiles that I remember my friend Swimmin' Jim.

I met Jim and Patrick at the Lake Forest Health Club pool in Lindenhurst, where nearly every day the three of us shared the pool swimming laps; had great conversations about their adventures in Phelps and their get togethers with their friends in the city and their high school bunch; and laughed -- a lot!

When I first met them, it was Patrick who was eager to meet a new friend, albeit who was quite a bit younger, and I was delighted to make friends with the "boys" who joined me in the pool. It took Jim a bit more time to warm up but I was determined to make him like me! So every day upon Jim's arrival I would say "Hello" and after I was done with my swim I would tell him "see you tomorrow." Eventually, Jim started to say "see you tomorrow" to me when he finished. That's when I knew I had won him over.

As an avid gardener, Jim was excited to bring "Surprise Lilly" bulbs to his friends at the health club. I planted mine all over my yard (he had a lot to give away) and every spring I am in awe when they decide to emerge from their winter's sleep -- they always remind me of Jim.

I will never forget my visit to their home to visit Patrick in his final days and bringing his favorite dessert, chocolate cake with butter! After Patrick's passing Jim and I remained friends at the pool until it closed in 2018.

Jim was a wonderful man -- intelligent and thoughtful. I will think of him fondly when his "Surprise Lillies" emerge and flower -- twice each season. Rest in Peace my friend and enjoy swimming again with your love Patrick.

Jim was part of a truly brilliant and legendary science department; we were in awe. Rest in peace, Jim.

Jim was a teaching colleague and a friend. There are so many memories of fun dinners he hosted when he and Patrick lived on Half Day Road, when we commuted together on the Chicago and Northwestern to Highland Park, when he and our friend David and I got together to laugh and tell incredible stories. Patrick was his anchor in life and I hope that Jim found some peace and fulfillment after Patrick's passing.

We once shared a lunch with Jim high on a hill overlooking San Francisco Bay near Sausalito. It was a "picture perfect" day in every way as we ate outside on the terrace at a well known restaurant. A soft warm breeze, watching the sailboats in the distance, champagne, delicious seafood, and the company of dear friends. We remember Jim´s laughter as we all enjoyed this special time together...an enchanting afternoon that will never be forgotten - just as we will never forget our friend and colleague Jim.

I am Jimmy's sister in law and my memory of him was his laughter. When he called I wouldn't answer with a hello, I always started singing Jimmy Mack to him, he always laughed so hard. Our last time, as always, I'd tell him I loved him, and he'd answer the same right back. No more pain, or loneliness. You are at Patrick's side again.
