Canandaigua – James P. Lyons, age 76, passed away after a long illness, on Saturday, October 5, 2024, with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Barbara (Steurrys) Lyons; four children, Lisa (Rick) Orlopp, Matthew Lyons, Steven Matteson (fiancé, Desirae Adams) and James Lyons; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three siblings, Barb Pollino, Kathy Roney and Patrick (Trish) Lyons; brother-in-law, Robert Steurrys; several nieces and nephews; and his canine companions, Sasha and Bree.
Jim was born in Geneva and was the son of James C. and Mildred (Beavers) Lyons. He attended Geneva schools and was a graduate of Geneva High School, class of 1966. Jim served with the US Army Special Forces in Vietnam and was awarded bronze stars and a purple heart. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland. Jim worked as a corrections officer for the Ontario County Sheriff's Department from 1987-2018, reaching the rank of sergeant. He worked in the Ontario County Jail as well as the Courthouse. Jim enjoyed drawing, golfing with his sons and going to the casino.
Services are private. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canandaigua. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 10727, Rochester, NY 14610 or Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675. Arrangements are by Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home, Inc., Canandaigua. Condolences may be offered at www.johnsonkennedy.com.
