James Joseph Madden, a beloved longtime resident of Arlington, passed away on October 1, 2025, at the age of 89.

Affectionately known as Jim, he is survived by his nephew Thomas, wife Michelle, and their children Thomas and Colleen; his nephew Kevin Madden and Kevin's daughters, Alicia and Samantha. Jim also leaves behind many cherished cousins and lifelong family friends, including Michael McCune, Paula and Frank Gaffey, and Elaine and Dennis McMichael, whose enduring bonds brought him great joy throughout his life.

He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Helen (O'Brien), and his brother Thomas.

Jim grew up in Somerville, Massachusetts, and was a proud graduate of Matignon High School (Class of 1954) and Boston College (Class of 1958). A passionate educator, he dedicated his career to Somerville High School, where he served as Head of the Language Department until his retirement in 1998. Beyond the classroom, Jim was deeply immersed in the world of Irish Step Dance, teaching and performing alongside his mother Helen for many years. He was also a respected adjudicator within the Irish dance community, known for his grace, discipline, and love of tradition.

Jim's zest for life extended far beyond his professional pursuits. He was an enthusiastic traveler, especially drawn to the landscapes and cultures of Ireland and France. Whether exploring historic sites, savoring local cuisine, or cruising the high seas during school breaks, Jim embraced every adventure with warmth and curiosity. A devoted sports fan, he followed Boston's teams with unwavering loyalty and spirited enthusiasm.

The Madden family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Brightview Arlington Assisted Living for their exceptional care, compassion, and kindness during Jim's time there.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in Jim's memory.

Mr. Madden was an extraordinary and caring teacher who always put his students first. As a French and homeroom teacher at Southern Junior High (SJH) in Somerville in the 1960s, he helped make my transition from Catholic to public school. I was terrified, but he always took the time to check in on how I was doing. As a high schooler, I regularly visited him at SJH. Many years after graduation, I ran into him at a Harvard Square restaurant and it was such a joy to tell him the difference he's made in my life. I will miss him and so will all of his former students.
