Mr. James Benjamin "Benny" Shiflett, Sr., age 83, of Rome, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
Benny was born in Floyd County, Georgia, on December 17, 1941, son of the late Joe Brown Shiflett and the late Jewell Dean Taylor Shiflett. He was also preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Joann Cantrell (Hershel).
A proud graduate of Rome High School, Benny went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Army, where he completed 23 years of active-duty service. Following his military career, he continued his work with the Department of Defense until retirement. He was also a devoted member of the American Legion.
Benny was the kind of man who could light up a room with laughter. His quick wit, sharp sense of humor, and endless supply of jokes kept his family and friends smiling through every season of life. He had a gift for finding the funny in everyday moments, and that joy will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. His steady presence, big heart, and laughter-filled stories will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife, Penny Elizabeth Shiflett; daughters, Stacy Lyons, Tracy Weldon (Sam), Jodi Payne (Jason), and Marsha Barnes (Jim); son, Jim Shiflett Jr. (Renee); grandchildren, Danielle Ely (Jonathan), Jake Shiflett, Peggy Shiflett (Hayden), Stevie Lyons, West Weldon, Jack Payne, Jaren Payne, Cece Weldon, Jillian Barnes, Gabby Barnes, and Caleb Barnes; one great-grandson, Greyson Ely; nephew, Tony Cantrell (Jackie); and niece, Dawn Braden (Greg).
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
