James J. Smith

James "Jimmy" Smith, age 89 of Ithaca, passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2025, after a period of declining health. James was born on April 2, 1936, in New Orleans, LA, the son of the late Ethel and Richard Smith. Jimmy moved to Ithaca with his family in his youth. He was a proud graduate of the Ithaca High School class of 1955. Beginning in his early twenties, Jimmy proudly served Cornell University's Statler Hotel and Hotel school in a few capacities, most proudly in his role as a butcher. Jimmy served Cornell for over 45 years. More importantly, this was where Jimmy touched the lives of peers and students and formed so many lasting friendships. On January 1, 1964, James married Magdalene "Lena" Garner, formerly of Berwickshire, Scotland. For many years, they not only loved their time together in Ithaca, but also their home on Cape Cod, MA, until Lena's passing in the late 1970s. James was also predeceased by his sister Jesse Hicks, along with brothers Leroy Smith and Leonard Smith, and nephew Edward Hicks. Surviving James are his brother Richard (Margaret) Smith of Kingstree, SC, nieces Donna Smith of Ithaca, Joyce Rounsaville, and Wanda Jackson, both of Chicago, and several great nieces. Jimmy will also be dearly missed by his friends, whose relationships lasted decades and some as close as family. Jimmy was exceptionally kind, tenacious, and never failed to make others smile. He will be deeply missed. Following Jimmy's wishes, there will be graveside services only. Services will be held at Frear Memorial Park on Thursday, October 23rd, at 10:00am.
