James Delbert Sweat

James Delbert Sweat, known affectionately as James, passed away on June 25, 2025, at the age of 83, in Duncan, Oklahoma, where he was born on March 23, 1942, to parents Roy and Freada Ziegenfuss Sweat. A man of deep Christian faith and unwavering dedication to his family, James's life was a testament to the values he held dear. Memorial services will be held July 26, 2025 at 2 pm at the Rush Springs Church of Christ with Brant Sweat officiating. Cremation services are under the direction of the Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home.
Graduating from Rush Springs High School, James went on to serve his community as a skilled Blade Operator for Grady County District 3. His commitment to his work was matched only by his dedication to his family and faith. He married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Trusty, on August 14, 1965, in Rush Springs, and together they built a life filled with love and laughter until her passing.
James leaves behind a legacy of love and perseverance. He is survived by his sons, Larry Sweat and his wife Cindy. His life was further enriched by the joy of his grandchildren, Brenna Sweat, Brant Sweat, and great-grandson, Ezekiel James Sweat, who will carry forward his spirit of kindness and generosity. Though his brothers, Bill, LeRoy, and Harldine Sweat, and sisters, Neola Abrams, Joyce Ramer, Geneva Hobbs, Frances Hobbs, and Geraldine Sweat, preceded him in death, their shared memories continue to live on through James's numerous nieces and nephews.
An active member of the Rush Springs Church of Christ, James's faith was a cornerstone of his existence, guiding him in his daily life and providing comfort to those around him. His interests were a reflection of his love for the outdoors and his enjoyment of life's simple pleasures. An avid hunter and fisherman, James found peace in the serenity of nature. His weekends often featured the hustle and bustle of garage sales, where he sought out treasures with an expert eye. Yet, it was playing cards and visiting with people that truly showcased James's gregarious nature and his ability to connect with others.
To know James was to know a man who embraced the world with open arms. He was a storyteller, a mentor, and a friend who could always be counted on for a listening ear or a helping hand. The legacy James leaves behind is not one of material possessions, but rather one of cherished moments, shared experiences, and the unwavering love he had for his family and friends.
