Dr. James Wasserman, 83, of Powell, Ohio, passed away on Monday, February 10, 2025 at Worthington Christian Village.
Born on August 3, 1941 in Toledo, Ohio he was the son of the late Lawrence Howard and Aurelia Hermione Wasserman. He was the loving husband of Karen B. Wasserman, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage.
Jim graduated from Plymouth High School in 1959, attended Western University (now Case Western) on a science scholarship, where he received a degree in Biochemistry. This was followed by medical school at Washington University in St. Louis. Upon graduating he joined the US Air Force where he did his psychiatric residency at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. He proudly served his country from 1966-1987, rising to the rank of colonel. Of his time in service, Jim was proud of being a flight surgeon during the Vietnam War, founding a psychiatric residency program at Wright Patt AFB, treating veterans with PTSD through cooperative programs with the Veterans Administration, and working with the intelligence community.
Notable titles and accomplishments include being an Associate Professor at Wright State University, Medical Director and Chief of Staff for Sand Hill Mental Hospital in Gulfport, MS, and decades-long memberships in the American Psychiatric Association and Ohio Psychiatric Physicians Association, which honored him as a Distinguished Life Fellow. Jim was a life-long aviation enthusiast and dedicated supporter of the US Air Force Museum. Jim also had musical passions that included singing in glee clubs and church choirs to playing the dulcimer. He was a student of history and military affairs, enjoyed baking (especially pies), and trading antiques.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, is son Michael (wife Adrienne) Wasserman of Herndon, VA and daughter Nicole Stragalas of Sacramento, CA; granddaughter Harper Carol Wasserman and grandson Arleigh MacLaren Wasserman.
The family will welcome friends on Friday, February 28, 2025 from 12-2pm followed by a formal service at Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home, 515 High St, Worthington.
