James "Papa" Wise April 28, 1924 – January 17, 2025
James Wise, lovingly known as "Papa" to his family and friends, passed away peacefully at the age of 100 on January 17, 2025, at Vista Veranda in Ravenna, Ohio. Born on April 28, 1924, in Akron, Ohio, James lived a remarkable life filled with love, dedication, and service.
James was the beloved father of two children, Jim (Sara) and Norm (Lisa). He was a proud grandfather to Mark (Mary Pat), Jamie (Debbie), Sarah, Jennifer, and a cherished great-grandfather to Julie (Andrew), Kelly (Matt), Kegan (Libby), Coreena (Reed), Griffen (Grace), Bubba (Sarah), Caleb, Kendall, Josh, and Sophie. His legacy extends to his four great-great-grandchildren: Porter, Callahan, Emily, and Luke.
James graduated from high school in Rootstown, Ohio, and began his career in skilled trades machinery repair at Ford Motor Company. Later in retirement, he served as the master club repairman at Windmill Lakes Golf Club.
During World War II, James served his country in the 44th infantry division. He participated in the invasion of Normandy and walked from the beaches of Normandy to Austria, a journey spanning nearly two years. His service exemplified courage and commitment.
James was a dedicated community member, actively participating as a Mason and a member of the Ravenna Elks Lodge #1076. An avid golfer, he spent many days on the greens and enjoyed visits to Seven Lakes in Fort Myers, Florida, with his wife, Ruby, who preceded him in death. James also enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and playing euchre. Known for his ability to fix anything, he even built two homes by hand.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, January 26, from 3 to 5 p.m., with the funeral 10 a.m. on Monday, January 27, at Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Home in Ravenna, Ohio. Committal with military honors will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery Ravenna, Ohio. Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate the extraordinary life of a man who touched so many people.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the Northern Ohio PGA Section Foundation, which supports programs positively impacting youth, military veterans, and local communities through the game of golf. Contributions can be sent to: Northern Ohio PGA Section Foundation, 4735 Richmond Road, Warrensville Heights, Ohio 44128.
James Wise truly lived a remarkable life. His gentle spirit will be missed but remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
