Janie Mae was born on July 18, 1939, to Ella Mae Thompkins and Wallace Coleman, Sr. in Morristown, TN. After graduatingfrom Morristown College High School, she went on to studyEducation at Morristown College and Tennessee State University, respectfully.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Education from Tennessee State University, she began her career as a teacher and educator in the commonwealth of Virginia, at West Elementary and Meadowview Middle School in Morristown, TN, kickstarting a 38-year career. During her tenure, Janie Mae also earned a Master of Education from Union College in Barboursville, KY. A proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Janie Maeembodied their motto; Intelligence is the Torch of Wisdom.
In 1999, Janie Mae retired and spent her time enjoying technological pursuits, service to Bethel United Methodist Church, and spending time with friends and family. Her commitment to her family was unparalleled, and her legacy of service and support to family will continue to span generations.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ella Mae Thompkins and father Wallace Coleman, Sr. as well as aunts and uncles Jeannette and Joseph Cox, Sr. of Morristown, their daughter Josephine Goins Cox and Claude L. Houston of Morristown, and Nena and Lewis Smith of Morristown, TN, Alpha Omega and Rufus Alexander of Dayton, OH, and Sylvia Adams of Indianapolis, IN.
She is survived by her brother Wallace (Jody) Coleman, Jr. of Cleveland, OH, cousins Janice Jackson, Claudine Jackson, and Dr. Alpha Alexander of Morristown, TN, Carl (Caresteen) Bowman of Columbus, OH, Becky Wilker of Knoxville, TN, Duke (Shirley) Smith of Albany, GA, and Steven Smith of St.Petersburg, FL. There are a host of cousins including Lisa Jackson Prewitt of Atlanta, GA, Lorene Jackson, Dr. Polly Johnson and her children Cassidy and Cameron from Knoxville, TN, Leonard (Ashley) Sparks Jr. of Indianapolis, IN, CarlCurray (Alexandra) Bowman of Bowling Green, OH, Myron Bowman of Columbus, OH, and Meka (Will) Pace of Columbus, OH.
Services will be held at Dockery Funeral Home on April 1, 2025, at 6:00pm, and graveside services will be held at Hamblen Memory Garden Cemetery on April 2, 2025, at 11:00am. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Janie, please visit our Tree Store.
