Jeffrey Wayne McGuire was born September 10, 1951, to Lois (Huff) and James McGuire. He is survived by his devoted wife, Deborah (Hougland) McGuire; daughters Erin McGuire (David Speigel), and Colleen McGuire (John Werkheiser); grandchildren, Colin McGuire, Simon, Lainie, and Isaac Speigel, and Whitney ("Winnie") Werkheiser; brothers Robert McGuire (Carolyn) and William McGuire (Helen); cousin Stephanie Poire (Will Wayburn); and nieces Kathy Miller (Seth) and Megan Sauceda (Jesse) and their families. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his uncle, Robert McGuire; aunt, Patricia Poire; and brother, Lawrence ("Larry") McGuire.
He grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, and attended Shortridge High School. He went on to attend Heidelberg College and Indiana University School of Medicine. After completing residency, he practiced Family Medicine in Monticello, Monon, and Lafayette, for over 40 years. He served on the Boards of the Sagamore Council of Boy Scouts, White County Memorial Hospital, and the White County United Way, and coached his daughters in basketball and softball.
A lifelong close friend lovingly described him as "a hard worker with a good heart and always ready to help." He translated these traits into a career as a dedicated, compassionate physician who continued to work through his last days. In his many years of practice, he touched countless lives and was fondly referred to throughout the community as "Doc." He enjoyed teaching and mentoring younger physicians (including Colleen), medical students and nurses.
He prided himself on being a spirited Irishman and in recent years, made it a priority to attend his daughters' annual St. Patrick's Day celebration. He was a fierce supporter of his daughters and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on at their sporting events. He gained (or he might say earned) a bit of a reputation for heckling the officials along the way. He was known for his quirky sense of humor and boyish grin.
In his family life, Jeff held high expectations, but was an encouraging, loving and generous husband, father, and grandfather. He was immensely proud of his wife's and daughter's accomplishments, and was overjoyed to welcome his grandchildren into the world.
He was an avid sports fan and particularly enjoyed cheering on his Indiana Hoosiers and the Indianapolis Colts. He enjoyed bird watching, working outside with the Orchard Lane Yard Crew, boating, and doting on his puppies.
While he will be greatly missed, his legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the values he instilled.
Visitation will be from 4pm until 8pm (EDT) on Monday, April 3, 2023 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello.
Private family funeral services and burial will be in Indianapolis.
Memorial contributions may be given to Food Finders of Lafayette for White County or Happy Tails. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
