Jill Susan Toomey (née Slaney), of Woburn, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2025. She was born on March 1, 1948, in Needham, Massachusetts.
Jill's life was marked by a deep devotion to her family and a passion for nurturing others-both in her personal and professional life. A graduate of Needham High School, Class of 1966, she went on to pursue her calling in nursing at the Boston School of Nursing, where she earned her RN. Later in life, driven by a love for education and child development, Jill attended Chestnut Hill College and received her teaching certificate in Montessori Education.
Jill shared wonderful years of marriage with her beloved husband, William G. Toomey, who preceded her in death. Together, they built a family filled with love and devotion. She is survived by their three children and spouses: Neal and Kirsten Toomey, Moira and Morgan Vittengl, and Kyle and Lori Toomey. Jill also held a special place in her heart for Matthew English and his wife, Melinda. Jill was happiest with her seven grandchildren-James, Stella, Vivian, William, Henry, Eleanor, and Shea-each of whom brought immense joy to her life.
Jill is also lovingly remembered by her family Ellen Slaney; Jacquelyn Mascetta and her husband Nicholas Mascetta; Christie Tierney and her husband Jeff Tierney and sister in law Ellen G Slaney. She was predeceased by her beloved brother Michael "Bruce" Slaney, her mother Cyrilla Glenda Slaney (Gass) and father Kenneth Whitmore Slaney. Her extended family includes numerous nieces and nephews who cherished their time with "Aunty Jill."
Family was the cornerstone of Jill's world. Her home was known for its open-door policy-there was always room at the table for one more. Whether it was a spontaneous gathering or a planned celebration, Jill created an atmosphere where everyone felt welcome.
Her love for travel took her across the globe, but no place held her heart quite like Barbados. It was there that she shared countless special moments with loved ones-a place that became a second home in spirit. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date, where she will return to Barbados one last time.
Jill had a gift for forming meaningful friendships throughout the many seasons of her life. During her years in Philadelphia, she cherished the connections she made and carried them close to her heart. When she returned to Massachusetts, she found peace by the ocean in Plymouth. A true Pisces, she was drawn to the water-it grounded her spirit and brought her serenity. Later, in Boston's South End, Jill discovered another beloved community, sharing long conversations and laughter with neighbors and friends over coffee at the dog park.
Jill's warmth extended beyond family ties; she touched many lives through both friendship and care. Her legacy is one of compassion, hospitality, curiosity about the world around her-and above all-a boundless love for those closest to her.
May Jill's vibrant and determined spirit and cherished memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her. In true Jill fashion, she requested no formal funeral, but instead wished for each of us to honor her by living life to its fullest.
