Jo "Hobby" Gibbs Obituary
Jo Malcolm "Hobby" Gibbs, of Jeffersonville, IN, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at the age of 88.
Born on January 26, 1935, Hobby's early years were marked by both athleticism and academic excellence. A proud graduate of Jeffersonville High School in 1953, he left an indelible mark on the basketball court, showcasing his talent and determination. His skills led him to Vanderbilt University, where he not only played basketball but also earned a spot in the top 10 all-time rebounding records, cementing his legacy in the sport.
Hobby's commitment to education was unwavering. After Vanderbilt, he pursued a Master's degree from the University of Evansville, further enriching his knowledge and contributing to his successful career. His dedication to service extended beyond his professional life, as he proudly served in the US Army, exemplifying the values of duty and honor.
Settling in Greenwood, Indiana, Hobby was a dedicated insurance salesman for Blue Cross Blue Shield and a long time member of New Hope Church.. He also volunteered his time with Big Brother Big Sister in Indianapolis and showcased his passion for mentoring and guiding the next generation. Hobby's coaching journey in basketball touched the lives of numerous young athletes. From coaching 8th grade basketball at Utica to high school basketball at New Washington High School, Huntingburg High School, Mt. Vernon High School, and Adams Central High School, he left an enduring impact on the sport and the lives of his players.
An avid supporter of the Indianapolis Colts, Hobby's loyalty to his team was unmatched. As a season ticket holder for 30 years, he cheered for the Colts through victories and defeats, embodying the true spirit of a dedicated sports enthusiast.
Hobby was preceded in death by his parents, Jo Watkins Gibbs and Miriam Rose-Gibbs; and his son, Michael Robert Gibbs.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Sherry Gibbs; his daughter, Kelly Jo Colvin; two grandsons, Michael Colvin (Brittney), Daniel Colvin; a great grandson, Kilian Colvin; and three siblings, Lindsey Gibbs (Kit), Betty McCormick and Nan McCullough (Larry).

Hobby was one of the high school coaches I always looked up to. But being 5´ 10" it was natural for me to look up to Hobby. His coaching of our center Bill Bullard was the most significant coaching factor that made our team the first to win a sectional championship for MVHS. The players thought it was funny when Hobby told Bullard he was not allowed to dribble the ball or when he ask me to get in front of Bob Ford and let him run over me after North shot free throws. That may have worked if the referees would have called a foul after I was repeatedly run over. Man was I sore after that game.
At the 50th anniversary of the championship Hobby and Sherry came to Mt Vernon and all in attendance loved the stories they shared with us. A few months later he came to Florida and I had the opportunity to ride in a golf cart with Hobby for 18 holes. I can´t but in words how great that time with him was.
Hobby was with me in a moment of my life that was one of the most memorable for me. I can´t speak for all of the players on the 67-68 MVHS sectional championship basketball team, but for me he was a fantastic coach and a great man to share a part of my life with. He touched many lives during his life and he will be deeply missed.

I babysat for Mr and Mrs Gibbs when they lived on Ford Road. He was also my teacher and he was always so kind and interested in what was going on in our lives. Rest in peace. Linda Dremstedt Mand.
