Joan Marie Dummer, 89, a resident of the Hillsboro community, passed away at her home on April 16, 2022.
Joan was born on October 26, 1932 in Silverton, Oregon. She was the third of seven children to Herman and Anne (Ficker) Schwab. She was raised in Mt. Angel and attended Mt. Angel Academy for Girls, and graduated with the Class of 1950. Joan attended St. Joseph School of Nursing and graduated in 1953 as a Registered Nurse.
She met her future husband Arthur "Art" Dummer while attending a weekly church dance. They soon began dating, and four years later they married on February 5, 1955 in Mt. Angel, Oregon. They first moved to Corvallis while Art completed his college degree in engineering. In 1959, they followed Art's work and moved to Stockton, California. Moved back to Oregon in 1969, and later moving to Hillsboro in 2010. Art passed away in 2018.
Joan was a registered nurse and when she became a mother, she began a lifelong career as a homemaker. She and Art had 6 children all together and raised their family on a filbert/Christmas tree farm in Gales Creek. Joan was the Avon lady in Gales Creek. She was also very active in the farming activities. Joan supported her children by volunteering as 4-H leader, PTA President, Campfire Girl mother, room mother, and a member of the Forest Grove Stitchery Guild. Sewing was a passion of Joan's as she was an accomplished seamstress. Joan made countless formal dresses, costumes, and clothing for her children over the years. She enjoyed playing piano and loved to dance. Art and Joan enjoyed traveling to Germany, England, and Austria. They also cruised around Australia and visited all 50 US States. Joan loved to plant a huge garden and used the harvest for canning and feeding the family. Family gatherings were very important to Joan and she encouraged the get-togethers with every possible excuse.
