Joan A. Paul, a beacon of generosity, creativity, and love, passed away peacefully of natural causes on June 26, 2025, in her birthplace of Chicago, IL, at the age of 92. Born on August 13, 1932 as the only child of Anna and Joseph Sleichert, Joan's life was a tapestry of devotion to her family, her faith, and the countless lives she touched with her kind spirit.
Joan was a lifelong Chicagoan and the cherished wife of the late Richard T. Paul. Together, they raised a family that was the very heart of Joan's world. She was the loving mother of Richard J. (Kathleen) Paul, Catherine (Patrick) McManamon, and John (the late Nancy) Paul, each of whom inherited her warmth and her innate ability to make those around her feel valued and loved.
Joan's legacy is carried on through her beloved grandchildren Nicholas (Courtney) Paul, Christopher Paul (Haley Bodette), Rebecca McManamon, Amy (Tyler) Jakubowski, Emily Paul, and Michael Paul. Her role as a grandmother was one of her greatest joys, and she instilled in them the virtues of kindness, family bonds, and a healthy bit of laughter. The family tree continued to flourish with the arrival of her great-grandchildren Lincoln, Lawson, Leighton, and Lorelai Jakubowski, and Jack Paul.
Joan's talents shone throughout her life as an outstanding actress with the Theater on the Lake group for many productions, drama teacher for enrichment classes at her beloved Notre Dame High School, writer and director for Knights of Columbus productions, and former president, newsletter editor, and longtime board member of the Chicagoland Professional Photographers Association. Her organizational wisdom and kind manner of management were an inspiration to many.
Joan's faith as a devout Catholic was a guiding light throughout her life, providing her with strength and comfort and a pathway for her generosity to benefit her community as a long-time member of St. Ferdinand Parish.
A friend to many, Joan's kindness knew no bounds. Marge Wechter, her longtime friend since high school, can attest to the countless memories and the unwavering friendship they shared. Joan's generosity of spirit made her a cherished companion, and her presence was a comfort to all who knew her.
As we bid farewell to Joan Paul, we celebrate a life lived with fullness and grace. She was the embodiment of love in action, and her memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate to know her. Joan's life was a beautiful reflection of the values she held dear, and her spirit will remain a bright light for her family and friends. Though she will be deeply missed, the love she gave and the life she shared will forever be treasured.
