Joe "Preston" Armistead of Alvin, Texas passed away on April 1, 2025, surrounded by the family he cherished. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
Preston was born on July 17, 1946, in Jackson, Alabama to John Preston Armistead and Gladys Morgan Armistead. He graduated from Jackson High School and obtained a degree in Psychology from the University of South Alabama and later became a CPA after earning an Accounting degree.
Preston had a long and successful career working in the petrochemical industry for companies that included Brown and Root, Timec and The Wood Group. He traveled internationally for most of his career and lived for a time in Libya and Venezuela. He met his wife, Ellen, while she was on an audit assignment in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela.
Preston was a versatile and gifted musician and loved playing music in the Praise and Worship band at Friendswood Methodist Church and in the Glory band where he played bluegrass gospel with other talented musicians. He enjoyed playing music in local nursing homes and seeing how much the residents enjoyed hearing the old hymns.
Serving his community was important to Preston, and he volunteered in countless ways throughout his life that included coaching his children's sports teams, serving on many church committees, volunteering for the Brazoria County Master Gardeners Association, going on mission trips, serving as an Alderman for Hillcrest Village and caring for foster dogs. He was skilled in woodworking and enjoyed making furniture and keepsakes for family and friends.
Preston was a man with a deep and abiding faith and leaves a legacy of love, kindness and humility. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ellen, daughter Hannah Weekley (Zack), son Jeff Armistead (Mary Allison), son Sam Armistead (Greer), grandchildren Carter Weekley, Camille Weekley and Maggie Weekley, sister Debby Davis (Jim), brother-in-law Robert Jones (Nancy) and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held for Preston on Wednesday, April 9th, at Friendswood Methodist Church at 10:00 am.
If desired, donations in honor of Preston may be made to Friendswood Methodist Church and the Brazoria County Master Gardeners Association.

Dear Ellen, Hannah, Jeff, and Sam,
I´m just heartbroken. Ellen and Preston have been such dear friends for over 35 years, and were Godparents for our son. Preston sang, and, of course, played guitar, for my mom´s celebration of life-
I´ll Fly Away. I will miss him.
I know everyone will. No one more than Ellen, though... what a love story!
Whoever said today that you never saw Preston without a smile wasn´t lying!
His faith was so evident...
Prayers for healing.
All my love, Michelle McNeely Mueller

I attended most every Tuesday jam session at the Alvin Senior Center along with Preston. His guitar and banjo picking was admired by all. Preston was pleasure to jam with and discuss old time music. His song choices were always top notch and a welcome addition to our group. He will be missed.
