John Allen Smith, age 76, of Mooresboro, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at his home.

John was born Saturday, April 3, 1948 in Cleveland County to the late Romey Smith and Betty Tate Smith. He served honorably as a Corpsman in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War on the USS Whetstone. He graduated from Gardner-Webb University with a Bachelor of Science degree. John worked as an engineer for PPG Industries for forty-two years before retirement. He was an avid fisherman and was known for his story telling and humorous jokes. John attended Goodes Grove Baptist Church. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Charles E. Smith, David J. Smith and a grandson, Dustin Allan Newton.

Those left to treasure his memory include his wife of thirty-eight years, Renee Street Smith; sons, Allan Newton (Penny) of Cherryville, Gary Jenkins (Jennifer) of Shelby, Eddie Smith of Shelby, Brian Smith (Margot) of Boiling Springs, NC, Steven Smith of Shelby; brother, Richard Smith (Miriam) of Polkville; great friends, Joe Stamper, Larry and Pat Pledger; eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. 

Due to the effects of Hurricane Helene the location of the service has changed. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, October 1st at Cleveland Funeral Services, 2518 W. Dixon Blvd, Shelby, NC with Reverend Robbie Hensley and Reverend Trey Newton officiating. Inurnment will follow at Gannt’s Grove Baptist Church with military honors being provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard.

Memorials are requested to Goodes Grove Baptist Church, PO Box 67, Mooresboro, NC 28114.
