John Antone Obituary

John Michael Antone passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 12, 2025 at the age of 93.
He was born on October 14, 1931 to Michael and Anna Antonopoulos in the Village of Kalamata, Greece. He was the youngest of eight children. He was fond of his family in Greece and was sorry that he was never able to return to visit them.
John met and married his beloved wife, Helen Markos in July, 1956. They had one child, their son, Michael John. In April, 1967, John and his family left Greece to seek a better life in the U.S., joining members of his wife's family who arrived a few years prior. At that time, by court order, his last name was changed to Antone.
After a short time in Ohio, the family settled in Charlotte. John spent his career working in various restaurants. His favorite, of course, was working alongside his brother-in-law, Nick Copsis at the infamous South 21. After retiring, John devoted his life to caring for the love of his life, Helen, who passed away before him in 2020. John and Helen enjoyed the social events and traveling with the Young at Heart Group at St. Nektarious prior to Helen's illness.
He is survived by his son Michael (Jodie) Antone of Monroe, NC. Dr. Peter (Pam) Copsis of Charlotte, NC ; nieces and nephews Maria (Tim) Tassopoulos of Atlanta, Georgia; Peter (Athena) Markos of Palm Harbor, Florida, as well other Nieces and Nephews, and great nieces and nephews, many of whom remain in Greece.
Services will be held at St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church, 5108 Kuykendall Road, Charlotte, NC 28270 on Thursday July 17, 2025 with visitation to begin at 10:00 AM and the service to follow at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Matthews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church.
