John F. DeWitt, Sr., age 84, a resident of North Chelmsford, passed away peacefully at High Pointe House in Haverhill on July 28, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Patricia (Quigley) with whom he enjoyed 62 years of marriage.
He was born in Syracuse, New York on May 16, 1940 and was the son of the late Frank and Betty (McNamara) DeWitt. It was here, as a teenager, he met and fell in love with Patricia. From that point on they were inseparable life partners.
After graduating from Most Holy Rosary High School, John graduated from LeMoyne College. For nearly twenty-five years, John worked for Aetna Life & Casualty as a Claims Manager in Syracuse & Buffalo, NY, before moving to Chelmsford, MA to open a new claims office. Although John retired from his insurance career in 1988, he decided to join his son Kevin opening up a sign business. He and Kevin worked together for thirty-four years before retiring in 2022.
In addition to his loving wife Patty, John is survived by his children, Laurie Corbett and her husband John, Jeff DeWitt and his wife Donna, David DeWitt and his wife Darlene, Kevin DeWitt and his wife Melanie, and his nine wonderful grandchildren, Tiffany Gigliotti and her husband Brian, Erin Corbett, Allison DeWitt, Johnny Corbett, Julianne DeWitt, Jackson DeWitt, Kacey Corbett, Emma DeWitt, Sam DeWitt; and his three great grandchildren, Ava, Grayson and Nora Gigliotti. He is also survived by his four siblings, Karen Little and her husband Melvin, Kathy Adrean, Debbie Eassa and her husband Andy, Jim DeWitt and his wife Teresa, and his brother-in-law Paul Snow. Sadly, John was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Snow.
Our Dad lived his life by two words – love and family, and led by this wonderful example. We, his family, will always carry on his legacy.
The family would like to extend its sincere thanks to the staff at Lowell General Hospital and the High Pointe House in Haverhill for their care and compassion.
Friends and guests are invited to call on Sunday, August 4, 2024, from 3–6 pm at the Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 5th at 11 am at Saint John the Evangelist Parish, 115 Middlesex Street, North Chelmsford. KINDLY GATHER AT THE CHURCH. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in his memory to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research at Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research<

So sorry to hear of Mr. DeWitt passing. We've lived in the same neighborhood for years, while out walking we loved to stop and talk with John and Pat any chance we had. What a wonderful couple. Our condolences to the DeWitt family.

For many years "Big John" was a constant at RSBoxing. We looked forward to seeing him each week and to the the silly banter that he would share with us. We loved getting to know him over the years and hearing about his family. He was always so positive and pleasant. Denis and I are sorry that we could not come up for the service but Denis is slowing down and travel is difficult. Just feeling so sad to know that Big John is no longer with us. Denis' visits to SLS and RSB are becoming more sporadic now as this disease progresses, but John's presence at RSB, like those of the rest of the guys and gals, has been such a joy in our lives. Sending hugs. Denis and Joan Byrne

My deepest sympathy on John´s passing. John was apart of our Parkinson Rock Steady Boxing class at SLS Fitness. I enjoyed his happy presence and when he stoped coming, I felt a loss. I kept thinking maybe he will come back. Needless to say he didn´t return. Thank you for sharing his obituary so now I know he won´t be joining us but his wonderful spirit remains with us at Rock Steady Boxing.
