John Filion

John Miller Filion, 80 of Champlain, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at the UVM Health Network – CVPH, Plattsburgh, after a lengthy battle with dementia.
John was born in Plattsburgh, November 12, 1943, the son of John B. and Catherine (Miller) Filion.
John grew up on the Filion Farm in Champlain. He later became a mechanic for Hutch's Pontiac, Anchor Motor Freight and 3J Fuels where he worked the majority of his life. He was a firefighter first, serving in the Rouses Point and Champlain Fire Departments. He joined Rouses Point Fire Department in 1969 where he served as Captain, Second Assistant Chief, First Assistant Chief and Chief from 1992-1996. He also served as an EMT and AEMT for the Rouses Point Rescue Squad. John was honored as Rouses Point Fireman of the year and Clinton County Fireman of the Year in 1981. He became Chairman of the Board of Commissioners for the Champlain Fire District in 2000 and served on that Commission until his death. He joined the Champlain Fire Department in 2003 where he also won Fireman of the Year and was granted Life Member Status in 2018. John was also a member of the Clinton County Firefighters Association, NYS Association of Fire Chiefs, President of the Association of the Fire Districts of NYS local chapter and an Instructor/Coordinator for the North Country International Fire Training Service. He also enjoyed working on his tractors, mowing his fields and cheering for Bill Elliott.
Left to cherish the memory of John are his son, John Paul Filion and his companion, Becky Dumas; daughter, Rebecca Lynn Filion, all of Champlain; one granddaughter, Ashley Filion of Plattsburgh; several nieces and nephews and his patient kitty Penny.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Paula "Lu" (Bombardier) Filion.
Calling hours will be held Sunday, April 28, 2024 from 10 to Noon at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 793 Gilbert Road, Mooers. A memorial service will be celebrated at Noon in the Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel, led by Kelly C. Donoghue. Burial will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery in Champlain.
