John F. Harkins, P.E.

Passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 3, 2025, in Boston, MA. Born on December 26, 1938, in Boston, John was raised in Milton, and resided in Braintree, for over 60 years.

John was the beloved husband of Mary (Kelly) Harkins, with whom he shared a lifetime of cherished memories. The high school sweethearts were married for 64 years. A devoted father, he leaves behind his daughter, Susan Cooney (husband Jim), and his sons, John Harkins (wife Patty) and Michael Harkins (wife Kacie). He was predeceased by his son, Steven D. Harkins. Nothing made John happier than his involvement in the lives of his grandchildren and taking part in their interests. Matthew, Sean, and Meaghan Cooney; Jack (wife Lindsey) Harkins, Makayla Harkins; and Michael, William, and Declan Harkins. He leaves a sister, Mary (husband Gene) Sullivan.

John graduated from Milton High School and Northeastern University. Upon graduation while working at MIT one of John’s first projects was contributing his expertise to the Apollo space project. After over 35 years as a Professional Engineer John retired from Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation.

As an active member of the Braintree Gun Club, he served on the executive board, where his guidance and wisdom were invaluable. His involvement with the International Society of Automation (ISA) allowed him to connect with fellow engineers, sharing knowledge and fostering advancements in the field.

Those who knew John would describe him as a loving individual who consistently put the needs of others before his own. His selfless nature was evident in every aspect of his life, from the way he raised his family to his interactions with colleagues and friends. John's thoughtfulness could be seen in the meticulous care with which he approached both his professional projects and personal hobbies.

John's journey through life was marked by dedication to family, compassion, and a gentle strength that will not be forgotten. He will be greatly missed by all
