John Ross Hockaday, Sr., age 82, of Shelbyville, TN, passed from this life on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Alive Hospice in Murfreesboro.
He was born on May 30, 1943, in Selmer, TN, to the late Bonna Morris and Mallie Vera Garrett Hockaday. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: George, Emmett, Jim, and William "Bill" Hockaday.
A hardworking and skilled mechanic, John owned and operated Hockaday Tractor and Equipment for 25 years before retiring in 2014. Beyond his career, he was known for his vegetable garden, raising laying chickens, and spending cherished time with his family. He was a faithful member of Edgemont Baptist Church.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, June D. Williams Hockaday; his sons, John "JJ" (Laisha) Hockaday, Jr., and Jeff R. Hockaday, both of Shelbyville; and his beloved grandchildren: Jessica (Keith) Cook, Jordin (Tyler) Ray, Cassidy (Nolan) Barnes, and Kenzi (Eli) Miller. He also leaves behind four great-grandchildren: Beckham, Sophi, Will, and Vivi Kate; sisters, Rose (Al) Alonzo of Bloomingdale, IL, Faye Derryberry of Ramer, TN, and Susie (Johnny) Huckabee of Eads, TN; along with many nieces, and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2025, in the chapel of Doak-Howell Funeral Home with Pastor Jimmy West officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, prior to funeral service starting at 10:00 a.m.
Memorial Donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital @ www.stjude.org.
