John Gavin Kohlmann, known by most as "Friday" 77, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on March 29th, 2024, after suffering a three-year long battle with multiple medical conditions.
Born on Staten Island, New York on July 7, 1946, to the late John and Phyllis Kohlmann, he grew up in the Great Kills section of Staten Island. He met his loving wife Alice of nearly 55 years and was engaged in 1967 prior to being drafted by the U.S. Army and deployed overseas. After being discharged, they were married in 1969 and moved to Bradley Beach, NJ in 1973.
John was an ASE certified mechanic for his entire life, attending multiple trade schools, was a certified welder, and earned numerous Gold Service awards through the Chrysler corporation as service manager for a large dealership. For the last 25 years of his career, he was the borough mechanic for Pt. Pleasant Beach and took pride in maintaining the best fleet of Police cars on the Jersey Shore.
After retiring, he and Alice moved to Toms River to be closer to their grandchildren. He enjoyed spending every moment he could with his Bride, three children and five grandchildren, which were the world to him. In his spare time, he also enjoyed fishing, trains, and vacations with his beloved family. He could also be found at local car shows with his 1970 Ford Torino Cobra, the exact car he purchased new in 1970. John was also a devote Catholic, and attended church weekly at Ascension Church in Bradley Beach, and later in life at St. Luke's in Toms River. When his health deteriorated over the past couple years, John and Alice would watch mass daily on television, and had Communion brought to their home weekly.
John is survived by his wife Alice, three children John Peter Kohlmann (Marlee), Kelly Kakol (Andrew), and Keith Kohlmann (Maura). Five beloved grandchildren; Kyle (21), Kaitlyn (19), Kevin (12), Molly (9), and Kiera (7), and many extended family members
Visitation will be from 8:00-10:00am on Thursday April 4th at Orender Family Home for Funerals 2643 Old Bridge Rd in Manasquan, followed immediately by a Mass of Christian Burial, held 11:00am at St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church, 1674 Old Freehold Rd, Toms River.
