It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved John Harold Lafond, who departed this life on August 8, 2025. Born on November 18, 1938, he lived a full and meaningful life dedicated to his wife Sandra Louise Carlson, his family, service, and community. He was the son of the late Harold Lafond and Elsie (Toikka) Lafond.
John grew up in
Gloucester, MA and graduated from Gloucester High School in 1956. On June 29, 1958, he married his high school sweetheart in a ceremony that marked the beginning of a beautiful partnership that would span decades. He and his wife 'Sandy' were true soulmates, spending nearly all of their time together and having recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.
Answering the call to serve his country, John enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served with honor and distinction. His military service took him to Osaka, Japan for 18 months, followed by stationing on Long Island, New York, and Fayetteville, North Carolina. These experiences broadened his horizons and instilled values of discipline and dedication that would guide him throughout life.
In 1964, John built the family home in Rockport, Massachusetts, creating a warm and welcoming haven where countless memories were made. He loved sports and was an avid fan of NASCAR, the Boston Bruins and the Boston Red Sox.
A lifelong learner, John pursued higher education while working full-time, earning a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering. He dedicated 38 years of his professional life to Gloucester Engineering, where he was respected by colleagues and valued for his expertise and work ethic. He retired in 2000.
Faith played a central role in John's life. He was a devoted member of the Pigeon Cove Chapel for 42 years, serving faithfully as Treasurer for 15 of those years. More recently, he was a cherished member of the Baptist Church of Rockport for the past 12 years. His great musical talent blessed both congregations, as he shared his gift through participation in the church choirs, bringing joy and inspiration to fellow worshippers.
John was deeply committed to serving his community and fellow veterans. He was a proud member of American Legion Post 98, where he continued his dedication to supporting those who served. He was also a member of the Freemasons, embodying the organization's values of brotherhood and service.
An avid golfer, John found great pleasure on the greens as a longtime member of the Rockport Golf Club, where he forged lasting friendships and enjoyed countless hours pursuing his passion for the game. He also enjoyed snow skiing into his 80s.
John will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to wife, family, his service to country and community, his devotion to faith, and his dedication to excellence in all endeavors. His legacy lives on through his children and grandchildren and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey.
