John Landry Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jan. 18, 2024.
John David Landry, a native New Orleanian who spent over 40 years capturing people and places of the world through a camera lens, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at the age of 68. Beloved son of George Pratt Landry, Jr and the late Jeanne Higginbotham Landry. Stepson of Margaret Landry. He is survived by his wife, Terri Lynn Landry, and his children, Joseph Zachary Landry (Courtney) and Remi Louise Landry Polk (Dylan). Grandfather of Emerson Luck Polk and Shepherd Pratt Landry. Brother of Amy Landry Bodet (Rene), Collette Landry Weaver (Rick), Timothy James Landry (Nilar), and the late George Pratt Landry, III. Stepbrother of Kerry Lentini (Joe) and Clarke Kissel. Uncle of Alexis and Justin Landry, Stanley (AJ) and Jeannette Weaver, Gabrielle Malbrough (Garrett), Amelia Morgan (Kyle), Joshua Bodet, Derek Hartmann and the late George "Geep" Pratt Landry, IV. Great Uncle of Malea Weaver. Grandson of the late George Pratt Landry Sr, Jeanne Develle Landry, Iris Higginbotham and Winona Robichaux Higginbotham.
Dave, as he was affectionately known, was a character in the truest and best sense of the word. A proud 1973 graduate of Brother Martin High School, he remained an active member of the alumni association and enjoyed the comradery of his fellow Crusaders. While studying communications at Loyola University New Orleans, Dave discovered his passion for the film industry, setting the stage for a remarkable career. His journey led him to become a long-time employee of WYES-TV, where he captured the culture of Louisiana in numerous public television documentaries, including Hot Stuff: The Restaurants of New Orleans and Louis Prima: The Chief; and explored the cuisine of the city in cooking series featuring Chef Justin Wilson, Chef Paul Prudhomme, Chef Kevin Belton, and most recently, the Dooky Chase family. A truly gifted cinematographer, director, and lighting expert, Dave showcased his talent on the Great Chefs franchise. As DP, cameraman and jib operator, he contributed to the success of diverse network reality series including Joe Millionaire, The Simple Life, The Real World, Temptation Island, Bar Rescue, The Great Food Truck Race, and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Beyond his cinematic talents, Dave was a naturally gifted artist and musician. He was the drummer in the popular local rock band, SEXDOG, performing at Voodoo Fest and local music venues. When he was off the road, cutting grass and bushhogging on the family's farm in Folsom was Dave's happy place. He loved feeding songbirds, his companion dog Francis, and playing with his amazing grandchildren. Dave will be remembered for the genuine affection he extended to all, from his family and neighbors to a stranger (and soon-to-be friend) met during his travels. He brought laughs to every gathering and was unwavering in his enthusiasm and determination for any task he tackled, whether work or simply helping others. Dave Landry leaves behind a legacy of creativity and an indomitable spirit. As we bid farewell to a true New Orleans icon, we celebrate the vibrant tapestry of a life well-lived.

I had the honor of working with Dave in the late 80´s as a writer/producer. More importantly, I was privileged to be a friend in his ever-widening circle even though our time together was brief. I was captivated by his open smile, ready laugh, and the clearest sea-blue eyes this side of Paul Newman. I wish I had told him so. Sail on, sir, until we meet again on that distant shore.

Dave was a student in the Loyola University of New Orleans Film and Television Department when I taught there in the 1970´s. After I left teaching and moved away from Louisiana, I would see his name in the credits of shows I enjoyed watching.
Recently with the Colorado cold drove us to Mandeville for a few winter months, my wife, Ginny, would meet with a few former student at a local watering hole and swap stories of our time at Loyola and the careers we followed since. Dave Landry would always join us if his work schedule permitted. Will miss him and raise a jar to him soon!

Dave and I attended Loyola together in communications in the mid 70s. And the last several years a group of alumni reconnected and have lunch a few times a year. It was nice to get together with Dave and the others and reminisce about our memories and current happenings. He will definitely be missed out of our group, he always added a sense of fun. Dave was the best of the best of all the videographers I have ever worked with! This news shakes me to the core. I worked with him for a very short time, but will never forget his smile, his laugh and his welcoming friendship. I wish you fair winds on your journey to a far better shore, my friend.
