John George Limberis, age 87, a resident of Dedham, Massachusetts passed away at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center on Monday, July 1, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy M. (Panagacos) Limberis with whom he enjoyed 54 years of marriage.
He was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts on January 18, 1937 and was the son of the late George and Barbara (Raras) Lebaropoulos. John attended Lowell High School and was a graduate of Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts before becoming a school teacher in the Lowell public school system for over 30 years.
As a young man, he spent his summers working at his parents' restaurant in Nantasket Beach (The Breakers) while he taught social studies at the Bartlett Middle School in Lowell, Massachusetts. He then moved on to teaching English as a Second Language where he found a passion helping adults learn a new language.
He and his loving wife Dorothy raised a family (sons George and Anthony) in Lowell and spent many summers managing a family business on Merrymeeting Lake, New Hampshire before moving to Dedham, Massachusetts where he resided for the past 26 years.
As the son of Greek parents, he embodied the Greek zest for 'zoi' (life) with many interests. His family recalls summers spent on myriad road trips from Lowell to his birthplace of Gloucester, where they would spend the day at the beach before stopping for fried clams and ice cream on the way home. Winters were spent trying to ski at as many different places as possible - John thought nothing of a long drive to spend a day skiing with his sons while they slept in the back seat on the way home.
Later in life, he and Dorothy spent many relaxing summers in Pemaquid, Maine where they enjoyed spending time on the beach, taking drives through local seaside towns, and they were always on the lookout for a good piece of blueberry cobbler. They also spent several winters in Nokomis, Florida enjoying the warm weather and taking long drives along the western Florida coast.
As a reflection of his Hellenic roots, John was a lover of anything Greek. Discovering the easy accessibility of classic 'rembetiko' music on the Internet brought him much joy, as did cooking classic Greek dishes. He was able to visit Greece twice in his life - the first time in Rhodes for his honeymoon and then Crete for the wedding of his son George.
John is survived by his loving wife Dorothy, two sons George (wife Joanne and grandchildren John and Maria) and Anthony (wife June and grandchildren Caroline and Nathan) and is predeceased by his father George and mother Barbara (Raras) Lebaropoulos.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, July 9th from 10 to 11am at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 62 Lewis Street in Lowell. His Funeral Service will follow the visitation in the church at 11am. Interment will follow at Westlawn Cemetery, Lowell. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John's honor to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, c/o Office of Development, 330 Brookline Avenue (BR), Boston, MA 02215.
