Dateline: Glenville John "Jack" Scales passed on January 12, 2025 with his family at his side at Mary's Haven in Saratoga Springs, NY.
A proud son of South Boston, Massachusetts, Jack was born on June 24, 1935, the first child of Martin and Marion (Duffy) Scales. Three siblings would follow: Patricia (John) and Joseph (Joan), predeceased, and Martin (Betty), of Whitman, Massachusetts. Jack graduated from the Gate of Heaven High School in Southie, where he also served as an altar boy. With intentions to see the world, he joined the United States Navy, only to be stationed in Newport, Rhode Island. The G.I. Bill allowed Jack to graduate from Boston College, after which he joined the General Electric management program with thoughts of ultimately earning a position with GE in Lynn, Massachusetts. He had posts in Cincinnati and Syracuse, before arriving at GE's headquarters in Schenectady. He would later go on to work at Finserv in Schenectady and Cluett, Peabody & Company in Troy.
Always the life of the party, Jack would meet the love of his life at a Cosmo Social Club event at the Bowlers Club lanes in Latham. Mary Ann (Masucci) became Jack's wife for fifty-six years. They resided in Glenville for more than fifty years, raising their beloved sons Sean and Daniel. Inspired by their father's love of Boston, both sons now reside in the Boston area; Sean in Charlestown and Daniel in Newton with his wife, Laura, and their two children, Anna and Nathan.
Jack will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality, the way he would connect with anyone and everyone, his natural curiosity and ability to converse about a seemingly infinite range of topics. All the world was a stage to Jack, and he always brought joy wherever he went, with strangers inevitably becoming friends by the end of the night. Jack made everyone feel better, and that's something special we'll all miss.
Calling hours for Jack will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2025, from 4 pm to 7 pm at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, Glenville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 11 am at St. Anthony's Church, 331 Seward Place, Schenectady. Entombment will follow at Sts. Cyril and Method Cemetery, Rotterdam.
To honor Jack, the family asks for donations to be made in memory of Jack Scales to the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany for Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties at https://fundraise.givesmart.com/form/1s83HA?vid=1h6fhp All donations will directly benefit Mary's Haven, 35 New Street Saratoga Springs, NY 12866, where Jack was provided comfort and care for his final days. Donations may also be made to City Mission (citymission.com).
