John James Schiemer, 77, of Maple Shade, NJ, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2024, after a short battle with leukemia.
Also known as "The Captain" by so many, John was the life of the party and lived his life to the fullest. Some of his best memories were made during his endless vacations. He loved taking cruises (too many to count!) and visiting tropical destinations. He had a deep love for being near the water and very fond memories of the Jersey Shore. His summers always included beach days and boating with his family, and trips to Atlantic City to the casino and boardwalk. John had a core group of lifelong friends and coworkers that he golfed with, and their golfing trips to Myrtle Beach, SC were legendary. He loved being on the golf course and hanging out with the guys, especially at the 19th hole. John was a Charter Member of the Bell Atlantic/Verizon Golf League, where he actively participated for more than 40 years. He was also especially close to his dear friend Bonny, and they shared many adventures together.
John was extremely social, easy-going and a kind, gentle man. He was well-liked by everyone who met him. In a social setting, you would likely see "The Captain" with a cold Keystone Light accompanied by one of his famous coolers. One of John's favorite expressions was, "He was hell when he was well", and that most definitely applied to him too. Although leukemia slowed him down a little at the end, The Captain always set the pace and it was up to the rest of us to try to keep up.
John was born on February 13, 1946, in Camden, NJ to Mary Schiemer (nee Waters) and John C. Schiemer. He was their one and only. A graduate of Camden Catholic High School, class of 1965, he went on to join the United States Air Force, where he served honorably in the Vietnam War from 1965-1969. John married Mary Lechleidner in 1966. Married for 28 years, they raised their three children together in Pennsauken. John was very proud of his children, Matthew, Brett, and Elizabeth. He was also "Grandpop" to 7 grandchildren. After his service in the US Air Force, he spent his career working in accounting until his retirement in 2008. Since then, he had nothing less than a great retirement spent golfing, travelling, and enjoying life.
John is survived by his three children, Matthew Schiemer (Ileana), Brett Schiemer (Crystal), and Elizabeth Savage (John), along with his 7 grandchildren: Ana, Sofia, Caden, Camryn, Crew, Jack and Luke. He also leaves behind several good friends and someone very near and dear to his heart, his loving and devoted friend Bonny.
Please join John's family and friends on Sunday, February 18th from 11:00am to 1:00pm at Inglesby & Sons Funeral Home, 2426 Cove Road, Pennsauken, NJ. The visitation will be from 11:00am to 12:30pm, with a service from 12:30pm-1: 00pm. A Celebration of Life luncheon will immediately follow at Pennsauken Country Club.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you honor John's memory by investing your time and resources doing something fun with your loved ones.
