Jon A. Beverlin, age 64, -- The Man, The Myth, The Legend – passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2025, surrounded by his loving family and his constant and faithful companion – his cat, Benny. (The same cat that seven years ago he said we didn’t need.)
Jon was born on September 20, 1960, to the late Carol (Johnson) Beverlin and Al Greenwood. His stepfather, Gene Beverlin, also precedes him in death.
Jon graduated from Wadsworth High School and The University of Akron, and also served his Country in the US Air Force, 3rd Security Police Group, Clark Air Base where he trained military working dogs, “Guardians of the Night”, to patrol restricted areas, to sniff out explosives, and to provide security for dignitaries, winning national awards for his demonstration and competition techniques.
Jon worked for Akron Public Schools for 30 years, starting among the ranks as a part-time custodial assistant, and because of his strong work ethic, his competence, and his hustle, he quickly rose through the ranks to eventually lead the entire department. Every position he held he performed with the highest level of integrity, earning the respect of those who worked for him and with him. During this time, he was an adult education instructor at Portage Lakes Career Center, Maplewood Joint Vocational, and The University of Akron. He taught classes that allowed others to become licensed in boiler operations, advancing their own careers. After retiring from Akron Public Schools, he worked another 8 years for the Stow-Munroe Falls City School District as Facilities Supervisor, where he was part of an amazing school family who appreciated his expertise, his efforts, and his dedication to the field. If you had the pleasure of working with Jon Beverlin, he taught you something. He leaves behind a legacy of excellence that will not soon be forgotten.
Jon loved to work, but he always made time for fun. A true Grill Master, renowned for his steaks, wings, and pulled pork, he enjoyed cooking and grilling for and with his kids. He was always up for a bike ride, a good meal at a local restaurant, or a fancy cup of coffee. He was known as “Queso” to his disc golf buddies Rebel Alliance and his friends at Monday Night Euchre.
If it’s true that he who dies with the most toys wins, Jon is wearing a gold medal in heaven today. His kids and grandkids will inherit a plethora of grills, kitchen gadgets, spices, tools, remote-control cars and trucks, video games, printers, and the latest and greatest pieces of technology money could buy.
Jon is survived by his wife, Becky, and her mother, Patricia Johnson, of the home. His three children, Amanda Markwalder (Aaron), Kimberly Dye (Patrick), and Tyler Beverlin, their mother, Christi Sopko Beverlin, and their seven grandchildren Jacoby, Charley, Keeley, Remy, Scarlett, Ben, and Kate. He is also survived by his sister, Linda (Frank) Martinez, a sister-in-law, Cindy Johnson, an aunt, Norma Gagliano, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Johnson, his sister Pam Mallory, and his in-laws, Jerry Johnson and Chuck and Carol Sopko.
In the final chapter of his remarkable life, Jon beat Stage 4 Esophageal Cancer everyday for the past 16 months. Never one to walk away from a challenge, he enjoyed conquering what others said couldn’t be done and did so by tripling his initial life expectancy. Early in his diagnosis, he participated in research studies so that this cancer could someday be diagnosed earlier, at a more treatable stage, knowing this would be of no benefit to him, but would greatly benefit those that face this battle after him. He has subdued the enemy, and it is up to us to finish his fight. To this end, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to support cancer research at The Cleveland Clinic through VeloSano, the Bike to Cure Event. Donations can be made online at www.velosano.org or by check mailed to VeloSano, PO Box 933441, Cleveland, OH 44193.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 30, 2025, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., with a funeral service immediately following at Roberts Funeral Home, Hillcrest Chapel, 9560 Acme Road, Seville, Ohio 44273.
