Joseph 'Sonny' DeLuca, 90, of
Old Bridge, NJ, formerly of Brooklyn, NY, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2025, at his home. He was the dear son of the late John and Barbara DeLuca (nee Genovese); loving brother of the Late Annabelle DeLuca and the Late Lawrence DeLuca; fond brother-in-law of the late Janet DeLuca; devoted uncle of Christopher and Lyn DeLuca, Denise and Robert Ferraioli and Robin and Robert Frisby; cherished great-uncle of Haley DeLuca, Robert and Nicholas Ferraioli, and Gabby and Matthew Frisby, devoted nephew of many aunts and uncles (he was especially close to his Aunt Palma Oliva, Aunt Viola Campanile, and Aunt Josie DeLandro); fond cousin of many, especially Louise and Anthony DeStefano, and Joseph and Paula DeLuca and the late Frank and late Jean Giordano. Joey was a devoted friend to Jean and the Late Sam Dansky and Maria Lipp (who were like sisters to him).
Mr. DeLuca was born and raised in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and lived for many years in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, before relocating to
Old Bridge, NJ, approximately twenty years ago. He was employed as a Parks Department employee, with the New York City Parks Department for over 20 years. 'Sonny' as he was affectionately known by a lot of his friends and family, enjoyed a good, long-life, filled with many happy memories. The holidays were always fun in his younger years, with a lot of laughter and food shared. Joey was an avid Bingo player, who would attend Bingo for many years with his favorite Aunt Palma (she resided with him and his sister Annabelle in Brooklyn for many years) until she passed away in 1994. He would then continue to play Bingo in Brooklyn and then at his new home Parish of St. Ambrose R.C. Church in Old Bridge until approximately three years ago. In his younger days, Joseph also enjoyed spending weekend afternoons on Coney Island and Brighton Beach Boardwalk with his friends. He also enjoyed frequent trips to Atlantic City with his sister Annabelle and travelled with her and his brother Larry to Las Vegas and took cruises with them and his extended family.
His Saturday routine regularly included attending 5:00 PM Mass at St. Mark's R.C. Church when he resided in Brooklyn, and then St. Ambrose R.C. Church, while living in New Jersey. Going out to dinner always followed this in one of his favorite restaurants, usually with his family and friends. 'Sonny' did enjoy a good party where there was music. He loved to dance with anyone who would dance with him! He especially loved doing the 'Lindy'
While he was loved by many, one of his biggest fans was his thirteen-year-old great-niece Haley, who had a strong bond with him and just like his sister Annabelle, they would end their visits with a fist-pump. She liked to be an advocate for him and felt the desire to protect him with his caregivers and many others. Haley would get very upset if someone was rude to him. She had no tolerance if she witnessed him being mistreated by someone and reminded people that we all will get old one day and if we are lucky, like Uncle Joey.
His family would like to acknowledge his wonderful care team of his live-in caregivers, Chantalle and Ardia and his hospice nurse Christie from Grace Hospice.
Rest in Peace Uncle Joey, you were certainly one of a kind and will be missed!!!
